So I think the negotiating tactic for Hathaway is pretty much a bus ticket in one hand and a lowest the Flames can pay 2 way deal in the other hand. With the Flames having 13 NHL forwards under contract now and some players that are probably in line for an NHL roster spot, Hathaway represents and meh player in terms of the importance of signing him.

I tend to agree, just a little more eloquence will be used though.

That's just the way arbitration cases go. The overwhelming majority of arbitration cases are settled before the hearing. In fact, this year is already a rarity with there being two cases that have made it to the arbitrator's decision. In 2016 and 2017 combined, there was only one case that went to the arbitrator's decision (and two more that went to the hearing but were settled before the arbitrator issued their decision).
I don't think it's a coincidence that both Jankowski and Rittich's signings were announced right around 7:00am MT, 48 hours before their scheduled arbitration hearings. That's when both the player and team are required to submit their written briefs prior to the hearing. By getting a deal done before the briefs are due, you don't have to read all the horrible things that the team was going to say about you in the hearing.

For those keeping score at home the Flames have - $5,388,290 remaining in cap space between Hathaway and Hanifin.

Can the Flames rescind the qualifying offer to Hathaway and let him become a UFA?

$5,338,290 if it's Rittich up with the Flames instead of Gillies.

What was the qualifying offer? Current salary + 10%? If so, that'd take him to a minimum of ~$750k?

I think you have a decimal error in your calculation. Only a $50,000 difference between them...so it's $5,338,290.

Haha... yup! D'oh.
So Hanifin $4.5M x 6 years and Hathaway gets $750k?

Not sure, thought it was 5%? Someone can correct that for sure. I believe that the arbitrator would have to come it at over $4M for the Flames to walk away. And because Hathaway has earned arbitration rights he is entitled to this (arbitration itself, not $4M lol). Otherwise there would be no point to having this and teams could cut bait all the time.

I am guessing that Brouwer gets bought out so that Hafinin can get locked up long term.

Because his pay last year was below $660,000, Hathaway required a 10% increase for his QO to $715,000. His QO also would have been a two-way deal.
Because his QO was a two-way, he might be willing to sign another league-minimum deal if he can get a one-way out of it, or even a sizable AHL guaranteed salary on a two-way deal. At this point, he should probably be concerned about clearing waivers and spending a significant portion of the season in Stockton.

They could always just throw Hathaway on waivers and run with 13 forwards.
If they signed Hanifin long term at around $4.3 they can theoretically fit the whole team under the cap without a Brouwer buyout.
They would have a million in space which is tight, but its been down before I believe.

I think that no matter what Brouwer gets bought out this year.
The Flames run into a serious cap crunch next year with Bennett, MT needing new deals so that probably will add 7 or 8 million bucks to the payroll and the year after that we lose half of the blueline.

Wouldn't it be just as effective to address that problem by buying out Brouwer next summer?

He can only be bought out within 48 hours after the last arbitration case is decided or settled.

Would be... but I don't think the Flames want to go into next season with little to no cap space left available..
If someone goes down and we need to sign another backup goalie or something we could be in trouble.

Presumably you get LTIR to cover off part of that. But I agree, you need a little room to make some moves over the course of a season.
