Every monday I look forward to updates to this thread to tell me what I think of the past SNL episode.
Justin Bieber was host and doubled as the musical act. My review? He's a great sport for all of the shots that were taken at him but it was not a great episode by any stretch - outside of the body double sketch.
I miss Wiig and all that she brought to the show.

At first I thought the Glice skit was the worst thing I've seen since Louis CK's Zog skit. I had my finger on the fast forward button, but then it started getting so ridiculous, I kinda got on board with it. It ended up being my favorite part of the night in what was a pretty average episode.

'SNL' Scorecard: Justin Bieber's Show Was All About Justin Bieber
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-r...b_2657680.html
Every single second of the show seemed predicated on waiting for the reaction of audience screamers. Perhaps an episode of "Saved By the Bell" is a better comparison. Regardless, the entire show was about Justin Bieber -- and "SNL" is at its worst when the show is about the host as opposed to the host integrating him or herself into the cast. I mean, this is a host who spelled Lorne Michaels' name "Lauren" on an Instagram photo this week. Regardless, we all lost a little bit of dignity this week.
Average Score for this Show: 5.23
· Martin Short 6.28
· Christina Applegate 6.13
· Seth MacFarlane 5.93
· Louis C.K. 5.92
· Anne Hathaway 5.87
· Bruno Mars 5.81
· Adam Levine 5.71
· Joseph Gordon-Levitt 5.51
· Jamie Foxx 5.43
· Jeremy Renner 5.39
· Jennifer Lawrence 5.38
· Daniel Craig 5.35
· Justin Bieber 5.23
The Sunday night documentaries are very interesting to me. Last week the 1970s, and last night the 1980s. They are talking about everything, warts and all.

It was steering towards the Chris Farley sketch breaking up Applegate and Spade.

do they still make every show where the comedian has to laugh at his own joke for 5mins?
nothing says I'm not funny like that...

On sunday nights they've been running a documentary review of SNL broken down by decades, they even know that they can never recapture the genius of the original cast and the bar was set to high.
It was funny with the 80's one that they realized that Eddie Murphy and Piscipo literally saved that show.
They also did the all star year where they had Billy Crystal rejoin the staff with guys like Christopher Guest and Michael Mckeon and Martin Short.
They actually thought that they were onto something when they bought on Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Michael Hall, Joan Cusack and Jon Lovitz, but the show was so bad that the last skit of the year featured them being burned alive in fire by Lorne Michaels.
With brief exceptions the show has never matched up to the original cast and has limped along for 30 years strictly to be a launching point for the next unfunny movie comedian.

I think the late 80's to early 90's era was way funnier than the original cast.

Ya hard to say because humour's so incredibly generational and thus subjective depending when you're born, but that early 90's cast was unreal. Farley, Sandler, Myers, Hartman, Rock, McDonald, Spade, Carvey, Schneider, even Kevin Nealon on WU...unreal cast. It's like a who's who of 90's comedy stars.

Obviously because of my age I never got to experience some of the 'golden days' of SNL, but my fondest memories of the show were of the mid-late 90's casts. Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, Sheri O'Teri, Horatio Sanz.

It's always so cyclical though. Even the early 2000s were pretty solid with Ferrell, Fey, Pohler, Morgan, Fallon (although I found him generally unfunny until he became a late night host), etc...
Edit: Also above

Man I try to like Bieber (some miss placed patriotism I guess) but found the SNL with him borderline unwatchable.

It could be because Chris Farley is my all-time favourite SNL'er, but I've always had a soft spot for the fatty of the cast. I thought Sanz was hilarious, and criminally underrated. I even really like Thompson and Moynihan, though not to the same level.
...and on a side note, since you mentioned her, I always had a thing for O'Teri back then. I would

I just caught the 90's the other day, I thought it was excellent. That was right when I got into it so there was some serious nostalgia going on. Man that was a solid cast..
Thought it was interesting to hear all the heat Michaels was in during the mid-90's by NBC suits. Sounds like a generational gap where SNL with its young, goofy cast was for the first time ever geared more towards a younger, teen/college crowd, and the baby boomer magazine reviewers were hating it.
As an elementary student at the time, I had no idea it was getting so panned by critics. For me even to this day, those were the golden years.

They should just alternate Justin Timberlake, Martin Short and Waltz every other week to try and regain any relevance this show had.
I'm sure nobody would complain, although I may eventually get annoyed with Timberlake.

Kevin Hart Tried To Save A Boring Show
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-r...b_2799702.html
Kevin Hart's effort as host of "SNL" was fine. Actually, everything about last night's show was ... fine, I guess. It was kind of the definition of mediocre, actually. Put it this way: If the most memorable thing about the show was the fact that the host said "goddammit" twice, well, that's not a great sign. Don't get me wrong, Hart came with a ton of energy (perhaps too much at times), but the material was mostly second rate. It certainly wasn't a terrible show, but it wasn't a good or particularly memorable show, either. (And maybe there was a chance the writers were already looking ahead to next week's Justin Timberlake hosted show.) Off we go to a still slightly bored Scorecard ...
· Christoph Waltz 7.03
· Martin Short 6.28
· Christina Applegate 6.13
· Seth MacFarlane 5.93
· Louis C.K. 5.92
· Anne Hathaway 5.87
· Bruno Mars 5.81
· Adam Levine 5.71
· Joseph Gordon-Levitt 5.51
· Kevin Hart 5.47
· Jamie Foxx 5.43
· Jeremy Renner 5.39
· Jennifer Lawrence 5.38
· Daniel Craig 5.35
· Justin Bieber 5.23
[Mackelmore and Lewis should have done Same Love. Should have had an entourage of people in thrift clothes]
