I have to say....watching you go through STD from the past is like opening a Time Capsule.
Oh sweet summer child..."STD better not eff this up!!"
Buckle up.

S2 E5. Tilly gets abducted by a bug, S31 searches for Spock, dead Dr returns.
I was ready to hate this episode so much but it turned out quite well. Starfleet is not evil. They don’t send secret agents to assassinate people. But the show did a great job of showing that S31 aren’t evil and were just doing their jobs. Even the Emperor showed some humanity and compassion. It was like they were trying to piss me off for the first 15 minutes.
I really enjoyed the mix of ST science and exploration, while also advancing the overall plot. We got to see some old schools trek where they show their inquisitiveness and respect for other life forms, mixing in some classic trek ingenuity. And yeah this show is heavy, like super heavy, on implausibility but I thought it was well done.
It’s one area that a serialized show sometimes misses out on is that ability to let ideas naturally grow but we got to see some of that with how they’re developing the spore network and the life forms that inhabit it.
I can’t remember many shows like this, maybe dexter, where from one episode to the next, or even within episodes, I’ll be cursing out the writers one minute thinking I’m gonna hate watch this garbage and the next minute I’m completely enthralled and want to binge watch it.
One complaint is they need to stop teasing us with death. Eventually it’ll lose all meaning. Seru one episode then Hugh the next. After enough fake outs I’ll start losing interest when they hint someone is gonna die or dead because they’ll have cried wolf one too many times.

One thing I have noticed is Trek likes to give you Hughs and then unnecessarily take them away.

I'm done with this show. I can't keep watching a show where I don't really like any of the characters.

S2 E6. Saru returns to his home world.
Not a bad episode but lazy, lazy writing. We never see the Baul except the one creature covered in goo. The fact that the post pubescent Kelpians are predators is never explored, starfleet just helps evolve an entire species with no thought as to the ethical or real world outcomes, they just take Saru’s word for it when it’s already been well established he’s emotionally compromised.
The obvious answer is that the Baul are either self species management system created by the Kelpians to prevent them from evolving into a warlike predator and that no Baul species ever existed or if they do exist that they’re culling was necessary and even agreed upon by Kelpians to keep the peace.
But nope, they just randomly end the episode with no resolution and move on to the spock mystery. Like what the hell?
Prime directive, better be careful we don’t break it, just kidding, let’s smash that puppy to smithereens.
And Hugh. It’s obvious something is up, the foreshadowing is so obvious. How do they show us that? Oh my scar is gone but I’m otherwise 100%, time for a nervous breakdown. Uhh, what? Again, it felt lazy. Like this script was a poor first draft.
Once again though, the angel/Spock stuff has me interested but the execution of the other smaller stories are really lacking the development and nuance they deserve. Very inconsistent writing.

S2 E8. This corrupted Android storyline might not be so bad if we knew anything about her/it. I don’t even know it’s name or anything about how it works.
Also, they know their system was invaded but they don’t even think about the fact it was those evil aliens? They don’t even run a diagnostic on their android that could be infiltrated? Come on!
Once again a fascinating storyline is diminished significantly by lazy writing.
S2 E9. Oh god and then they think I’m supposed to give a #### that they killed the Android lady? The same one whose name I didn’t know and who had literally never spoken before this episode? Yawn. She’s basically a redshirt, who cares if she dies? She’s like one of those statistics they read out when the captain asks for a damage report and they say “6 wounded, 1 dead” and no one blinks an eye and it’s never mentioned again.
This is worse than lazy writing, it’s plain bad.
I’ve also now realized this takes place before Picard so I’m assuming that it is the same robots that want to destroy all sentient life.
I also feel like the writers know how dumb section 31 being evil is in the context of Star Trek and the timeline and keep teasing it and then pulling it back. In a good way though because starfleet conspiracies are idiotic. Although it doesn’t explain why section 31 thought Spock killed those people when he didn’t. Like no one bothered to actually ask that star base if those people were dead? We’re supposed to believe all of star fleet and section 31 were fooled by the sentient AI computer and never even checked? Talk about an idiot plot. “Attention Spock, we heard you murdered some people”, “negative, just call the star base and ask”, “oh good call, we hadn’t thought of that”. Boom solved. No galaxy wide police chase necessary.
And where the hell did Control come from on the first place? All of a sudden they’re like, “oh by the way we’ve never mentioned this before but all of starfleet decisions are put thru an AI machine.” Seems like something they should have mentioned previously

S2 E11. Now this is what I’m talking about. Fantastic episode. Best of the series so far. Good villain, good tension, good character development, some good action, some ingenuity and science. It had everything.

Yup, in this time line Discovery takes place about 10 years before Star Trek. Kirk was 34 at the start of the Original series so he would have been a 24 year old LT on the USS Farrogut at the time of Discovery. Pike was about 5 years into his command tour of the Enterprise and hadn't met Kirk yet.

As I've noted several times, I have some major issues with S2, but the last few episodes have been fantastic. I'm about half way done S2 E13 and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but this series reminds me a bit of Dexter. Not in content obviously but in the writing. One episode my eyes are rolling so far back in my head that I can see my own brain. Next episode I'm enthralled and feel like it is top notch sci fi/Star Trek. If they can find some more consistency to the writing, especially with the characters and subplots, this series has some real potential.
