I would have to disagree with this statement.

Can't really help with how it takes going to the U of C.

Getting out of Douglasdale is an unapologetic bitch.

What is "small town feel"? You can walk to everything you need in Sunnyside, Hillhurst, West Hillhurst.

I think the bums hipsters and loud people sort of ruin the small town feel

What about Quarry Park? Seems like lots of new stores going in there, and it's easy access to Deerfoot or Barlow. The homes along the river look nice on realtor.ca, but I admit I know nothing about the area other than I go there every once in a while for a coffee at Starbucks.

The only problem with Quarry Park is that the access from 18th onto Glenmore can be as awful as getting onto Deerfoot from Douglasdale.
Off peak, it would be a fantastic area.

Or Ogden Rd -> Highfield and come in the South way. Depends where you’re going and the day I guess.

Peak is a nightmare. It’s like a little satellite downtown.

I go from deeper in the SE to Kensington and its less than half typically. Have really quick in/out access off Deerfoot into my community (Cranston) which maybe helps.
Was in Copperfield previously and hell its 10-15+ minutes just to get onto Deerfoot from Copperfield (and some people were 5+ minutes deeper into the community then me). I assume some far back corners of McKenzie Town would be the same.
Regardless an hour and 20 minutes seems like a stretch.

I live in Cranston and commute downtown every day. I also drive my son up to ACH every other month for appointments.
For the most part, traffic in Calgary is a breeze compared to other large cities. Ideally, try to avoid the peak of the morning rush (7:15 - 8:00) and afternoon rush (4:15 - 5:00). Even during the peak of rush hour, the SE to downtown is ~40 minutes on average. As others have stated, avoid taking Deerfoot through the Anderson/Bow Bottom area if you can as it's the worst bottleneck in the South.
I would say that traffic has improved slightly with some of the improvements mentioned above and have high hopes for some of the projects currently under construction. The ring road expansion to the West and dedicated BRT lanes specifically. Both are a few years out though.

SE to downtown is tolerable, SE to NW is for masochists...

24th St to Glenmore solved a lot of it for me. Hell I'll even take it all the way through to Ogden road and Inglewood into downtown if it's rush hour still a pain but better than deerfoot some days.
All I'll say is working 4:00am to 1:00pm rocks

If your goal is to be in the NW for work and DT for her - why not move to an *actual* small town like Cochrane? Cochrane to Crowfoot (maybe McMahon for parking), and then you both LRT it to work.

A few of my friends have bought places in McKenzie Towne. They are happy but also work in the SE. It is a nice area with access to services but I would not consider it anything special or worthy of being a first choice. There are plenty of really nice neighbourhoods in Calgary. Move to the NW for a good lifestyle and shorter commute.

Cochrane is anything but a small town now. It's approaching 30 000 people and the road system cannot handle the volumes. Once you are out of town it is a little better but in town the main arteries (1A and 22) are 2 lanes roads with ever increasing amounts of traffic lights to clog things further. As nice a town as it is there is no way I would live there and commute into Calgary. Cochrane wants to pretend it is still a small town, it is not - it is a small city.

Yeah, the 1A/22 intersection has been a disaster for close to 20 years now. The current plan for building an interchange there doesn't even begin construction until fall 2019. Probably going to be fall 2021 or spring 2022 before it's done.

It will be much better in around five years once the sw ring road is complete.
Edit: the government says it should be done by 2021.

Not really because the final link in the ring road is not part of this project and is not currently being built nor is it under immediate consideration to be built. I guess it will be somewhat better (maybe), it will depend on how much traffic gets dumped onto Sarcee which will be the only way to complete the trip.
