I never had this done. I was planning on it though. Then my wife needed operation to take care of scarring from ovarian cysts and they decided that tying her tubes would also help with her problems with cysts. That was like my get out of jail free card right there.
I was nervous to take the steps because of a previous boss' experience with the procedure. It took him two weeks to recover. He had it on Thursday, didn't come to work at all for the next week, and then the week after that he was wearing baggy track pants and not moving very well. He had a lot of pain that didn't go away for a long time. Obviously he is the exception to the rule, but seeing what he was experiencing really made me nervous about the procedure.
Now for funny story time. A friend had this done on a Wednesday. Took the next two days off of work and returned to work on Monday. At that time he drove truck around town making deliveries to businesses. His first stop on Monday morning he hopped out of the truck as he normally does and suddenly remembered that he had to take it easy! It felt like we has kicked in the junk harder than any other time. He was doubled over on the ground, moaning in pain, and it was attracting quite a crowd. He said it was quite embarrassing to tell strangers "I'm okay, had a vasectomy last week and forgot that I shouldn't drop down from the truck." Other than that, his experience was good.

Not sure if he's still around but I used Dr. Burn who was around Dalhousie I think. Despite the name (there is/used to be a Dr. Hanslip) he was good. We joked about him needing a McDolands like sign with xxxxx served. He was over 1000 at that point and I'm sure more than double now. Similar experience to Troutman, no muss no fuss, I was at a stag that night.

Also not sure if he still does them but I had mine done by Dr Eric Babins. He worked out of Southland Leisure Centre at the time (Lifemark Physio) and teaches at U of C, plus has been team doctor at some point for the Hitmen, Stamps, Mens and Womens National hockey teams which made for some interesting conversation during the procedure.

I would say that is good timing ;-)

I went to Dr. Crouse about three years ago. Two tiny slits, very little pain. Had the procedure on a Thursday afternoon and I was back at my desk the following Monday.
Unlike troutman, I did get checked out a few months later. Neither time I've had sex since then has resulted in my wife getting pregnant so the procedure was a complete success.

Just had the procedure done at Intramed this morning by Dr. Crouse.
It was much less of an event that I had made it out to be in my head. Only slightly uncomfortable but definitely not painful and Dr. Crouse basically provides a play-by-play of what's going on throughout the relatively quick (10 mins) procedure. It helped put my mind at ease anyway.
I feel much closer to my avatar today for some reason.

I'm going to go in myself.
a lot of people swear that the best way to go is with the Pollock Technique, the combination technique of No-Scalpel No-Needle.

think I'll look into this.

How do you know you are 100% sure you are done having kids? My wife and I have two and are not sure about a third. I'm leaning towards being done and I think she's more 50-50.

some of us are of an age and/or time in our lives where we 1000% know we are done.

It's not an easy decision, but having a boy and a girl, and seeing how difficult the pregnancy was on my wife the last time I made it an easy decision. My wife absolutely loves babies and children, and she was in favor of this because of how difficult the first and especially the second pregnancy was.

This is sort of what happened to my cousin actually. They initially wanted 3 but she had horrible pregnancies and decided she was done after two so he went and had the procedure. It didn't take and they decided it must be a sign to have a third. So they did and then he had it redone.
In the meantime, perhaps suggest a more semi-permanent birth control method to your wife, like an IUD? They last for up to 5 years and are easy to remove should you decide to have another one.

I know we're done for sure. My wife and I can barely keep it together with 2 kids. I couldn't imagine 3. Some people are good at domestic life, some not so much. We fall closer to the latter for sure.

Some of us have never wanted kids. While I did wait until my mid-30's to get the procedure, I had never even had the "Maybe I do, maybe I don't..." feelings some folks have. I've always been sure that I have never wanted to have kids.

Do you think that's common? I'm also in the group of never, ever wanting children but it hasn't really occurred to me to get it done. Maybe I should.

I had it done.
you don't really feel anything but a slight tugging on your vas when the procedure is being done...and a burning smell
recovery is easy, a bag of peas and a weekend off. I had no complications...had to go easy at the gym for a couple weeks.
then I had to go wank in a cup a couple times and that was it.

Not really. The majority of the people I've encountered have been at least on the "maybe I do, maybe I don't" fence, which makes sense to me. The certainity I've felt about not having kids has always kind of made me wonder, especially as a lot of society is built on the 'grow up, make a family' idea. Honestly, the only other person I can recall meeting who has never wanted children is my wife. I imagine that more are out there, but it's likely pretty rare.
I got it done because, despite being in the 'never ever' camp...accidents could happen, making for some very difficult choices I had no wish whatsoever to face. A short, inexpensive, relatively pain-free procedure can ensure that it's no longer an issue with me? Sign me up.

Got back from Intramed from getting this done this morning, definitely built up in your head to be worse than it actually is. The guy on the last page described it well thouigh, like the feeling in your gut after you get nutted (but not as severe as getting nutted) just kinda hanging around. Nice to have an excuse to lay around for a few days. No more kids for this one!

You still have a few months until you can be sure about that.

Aha, but we considered this! My wife is pregnant with our third, due in two months. Then there’s the 6 weeks without doing the deed after delivery. So by then I should be all cleared out.

I found submitting the sample to the lab techs afterwards the most traumatic part...
I went to Intramed and was done in 6 minutes. Lots of people say they're recovered in a weekend. In my experience, it probably took two weeks before I started to feel normal again.
Get lots of rest, use frozen peas, and put on some tight underwear!
