Default Actor Ian Holm passes away at 88

Loved this guy's work in pretty much everything I've seen him in. Terrific actor.

Legendary British actor Ian Holm, whose storied career included the roles of Ash in Alien and Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, has passed away. He died at the age of 88.

The news was first confirmed to the Guardian by Holm's agent, who wrote, "It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer.... Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely."

Holm's agent confirmed that his death was caused by an illness related to Parkinson's disease.

A veteran of stage and screen, Holm's career also included memorable turns in Chariots of Fire, The Fifth Element, Brazil, The Madness of King George and Atom Egoyan's adaptation of The Sweet Hereafter.

Holm is survived by his fourth wife Sophie de Stempel and his third wife Penelope Wilton as well as his five children from previous relationships.

One of my favourites of his is called The Emperors New Clothes. About Napoleons exile. Dramedy. I quite liked it.

IMO, one of his best performances was in the Canadian film the Sweet Hereafter. Brilliant and heartbreaking movie.

Ian Holm was one of those actors who elevated every role he was portrayed.

Farewell, dear Bilbo. Until our next meeting.

I recall as a young teen being chilled by his portrayal of Ash in Alien.
