No kidding. Kind of a head scratcher there. To me he's one of those guys that's excellent at being adequate in a top pairing role. Nothing outstanding to his game.

If Couture doesn't break his hand I think he would have been a lock for this team above many of these forwards.
Marleau probably was a bubble addition.

I would have him as the 3rd/4th line C. Probably the best faceoff man we have and best defensive forward as well.

Yeah you gotta feel pretty terribly for Logan Couture. He's definitely on this team if he doesn't get hurt.

Well he doesn't beat out the other centres so I think he rotates with Carter as the RW on that line.

Bergeron when holding a lead and Carter early on ad when trailing.

Feel bad for the guy.
Given Yzerman is his GM it has to be a little uncomfortable between the two.

Smith, Hamhuis, Marleau sit in the stands.
Again, there is 0% chance that Canada's top two faceoff takers are playing on the same line (Toews, Bergeron).

EDIT: I see you responded above. That's why I think Bergeron plays as the 5th Centre, and isn't necessarily "on a line". He will get into the game a bunch though.

Hard to complain about the team, and proper positions are important, however my thoughts are, I would rather have:

Giroux > Kunitz
E. Staal > Nash

Really happy for Sharp, Benn, and Duchene

Agree. And I think Tavares sees more icetime on the wing of Getzlaf or more likely, Toews.

I don't really know why at all, but this team does not fill me with confidence. No basis for this feeling, but, there you have it.

Rick Nash is not a good pick IMO. I don't like it for a multitude of reasons including his lack of solid play this season, but the worst part is taking a roster spot of someone more deserving.

Giroux, St. Louis, Couture, Seguin, E Staal, are all more deserving than Nash.

My attempt at guessing line combinations.

Kunitz / Crosby / Stamkos
Sharp / Toews / Tavares
Duchene / Getzlaf / Perry
Benn / Bergeron / Nash
Marleau, Carter

Keith / Doughty
Bouwmeester / Pietrangelo
Vlasic / Weber
Subban, Hamhuis

Price
Luongo
Smith

The selection just shows how much depth there is in Canadian hockey talent pool.

P.S. Still can't believe Jumbo Joe didn't make it.

I like that, but I swap Duchene and Benn in order to add that speed element to what amounts to a slower Getzlaf line.

Tavares plays wing IMO

Crosby
Getzlaf
Toews
Bergeron up the middle

My thoughts after thinking about it for an hour or so is that we have a wealth of talent available here and there really wasn't a bad choice one way or another. The likes of Koivu, Jagr, Selanne are all great players, but I'm glad we are fortunate enough that the 'ol boys are not our best players.

The biggest surprise for me was holding a spot open for Stamkos. Don't get me wrong he is an amazing player, and at any normal time for sure he should be on the team, but he is coming back from a broken leg and I would be very surprised if he is up to game speed by the olympics.

You could argue that with the incredible depth that the team has you can afford to hold a spot for him and if he isn't up to speed you are not losing anything. I still think he is young enough that if he didn't make this team he will make future olympic squads, use the spot for a healthy body.

I'm a big fan of Joe Thornton and would have liked him on the team but I get why he didn't make it. Too slow for the big ice.

If I was picking the team I likely go with.

Kunitz-Crosby-Stamkos
Duchene-Getzlaf-Perry
Benn-Tavares-Seguin
Sharp-Toews-Bergeron
Giroux, Nash

Out: Carter, Marleau,
In: Seguin, Giroux,

As an extra forward Nash makes more sense than St.Louis IMO and I think Seguin and Giroux bring heart and speed on the lower lines.

Keith-Doughty
Bouwmeester-Pietrangelo
Vlasic-Weber
Giordano-Subban

Out: Hamhuis
In: Giordano

More basing it on just how good Gio has been this season, if he doesn't get hurt I think he was easily the 8th d-man.
