Ongoing Las Vegas 'pro-tips' thread - Advice on all things Vegas
Given Calgary's dearth of drivable US centres, I know a lot of Calgarians fly to and from Vegas regularly for pleasure and for shopping.
As such, I thoguht I'd start a thread where people can discuss Vegas and get tips, such as where to stay, deals, pro-tips on things to see and deals to be had.
Post away, Vegas-bound Calgarians!

I'll start things off:
I am planning to go to Vegas Aug 10-15th for a shopping trip, in advance of a trip to Europe in the fall, so that my wife can shop for the trip. Essentially a pre-trip shoppping...trip?
(yo dog, I heard you like to trip, so I put a trip on your trip so we can trip while you trip.)
My questions for the Vegas-veterans: - Where does everyone find the best "flight and hotel on the strip" deals?
.
- Is it worth renting a car to do shopping at the outlets and malls, or are cabs cheaper?
.
- What are some hidden gems near the strip people like (shows, events, things to see, etc) for realative Vegas newbs? Wife has been once as a child and I went as a 19 year old who's only memory is loathing how I could gamble in Calgary but not in Vegas.

The north outlet mall is where you want to shop. Its about a $25 cab ride from the strip. We went in May and pricelined the hotels, it depends if you're there for a weekend or weeknights. We were able to get the Venetian for $110/night during the week.

Tip #1: go without wife.
Tip #2: there are charter buses that go to the outlet mall from any major hotel, if you are cost conscious
Tip #3: book the cheapest room at a hotel, and then slip the desk clerk a $20 to upgrade you - it's August, and they should have tons of rooms

Harrah's outdoor bar has the biggest drinks I have ever seen. $30 for a drink that needed a neck harness to carry it around. Lime margarita, a 26 of tequilla and a 26 of triple sec.

Yeah there abouts, depending where you stay it goes up and down a bit. We don't bother renting cars in vegas, too much hassle when you can walk to most places on the strip.

Take limos ~ especially from airport. Usually only $20 more, and without the lines and hassle of cabs.

Alright how long of a trip do you guys recommend? Me and the wife have discussed doing Vegas next april for my 30th birthday, but neither of us has ever been.
Just 3 days? (Friday to Sunday) or do you recommend more/less?

Also if you're doing lots of shopping bring a second suitcase inside your primary one. That way you don't have to buy one there, and you can save on the second bag costs the airlines like to gouge on.

I find Thursday to Sunday is good...Depending on the flight you won't get in and settled at the hotel until about 11pm or so. If you go on the Friday and get there at 11pm you are already down a day.

Check out the show called Absinthe outside Ceasars! That show had me in tears. It is also near that discount show ticket booth.

It kind of depends. I could do Vegas with my wife for a good week if we were staying at MGM or the Bellagio because they have awesome pool/beach area's. A few days of relaxation and then golfing mixed with a couple days of sight seeing and shopping and you're easily filling a week.
But if I go with my buddies then I like to get in and out of there in no more then three nights. I don't think my liver can take any more then that.

I would cab or limo anywhere in Vegas. Don't rent. Surprisingly limos can be a lot cheaper than cabs if you have a large party. Sounds like you don't though.
My Vegas faves in no particular order:
Hotels: Venetian, Aria (City Center), Mirage, Bellagio
Clubs: Prive, Tryst, Pure
Shows: Love (Cirque de Solei), Jay Leno, anything at Spearmint Rhino...bring the wife.
Shopping: Forum Shops (Caesars), Fashion Mall, Outlets
Restaurant: The Country Club (Wynn) - date quality
Quick food: Carnegie Deli (Mirage), California Pizza Kitchen (Mirage), Earl of Sandwich (Planet Hollywood), Lemongrass (Aria)
Poker Rooms: Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian...Mirage gets an honourable mention for it's laid back atmosphere.
I would highly recommended passing on any of the following hotels: Excalibur, Stratosphere, Paris, TI, Flamingo, Luxor, Imperial Palace, as well as any other non-strip hotels. Saving the extra money just isn't worth it. Trust me.

Yeah, I went to that show. There was some dude sitting near me that sounded like a very aroused hyena when he laughed.

If you're going with your wife you could easily do 4 or 5 nights. If you're a party animal and going with friends, 3 nights is good as it takes a toll on your body. You might have a hard time doing everything you want with just 3 days if it's your first time. You'll probably spend nearly an entire day alone just walking the strip and checking everything out, window shopping, etc. Then if you do a trip to the outlets, that takes up quite a bit of time too. I would assume you'll be wanting to see some shows and go for some nice meals? If so, I would say 4 nights is the way do go.

1. Can't help you here as we have a house down in vegas and I either stay there or at a comp'd room. If you are looking at places to stay that don't break the bank there are a few. When I used to look for places I just looked for location and how nice there pool was. The Flamingo is a good mid. price with clean (but dated) rooms with a very nice pool central to the whole strip. The Tropicana might be a good deal too as they just finished some upgrades to it but I have no idea exactly what its like. It is on the south end of the strip. There are other places but thats an example, and of course there is always higher end places like the Wynn, Bellagio etc.
2. Take the bus if you want to go to either of the main outlet malls. The north end one (Las Vegas Premium Outlets) is the best imo. The bus you want to take is the downtown express NOT THE DUECE. The Duece you will have to transfer but the express will take u from one outlet mall to the other (stopping along the way at other stops). I beleive its only like 7 bucks to ride for 24hrs. Plus it stops along the strip at pretty central locations to most hotels.
3. There are tons of shows that you could see that are all great. Terry Fator, Garth, almost any Cirque show. Even some of the topless shows such as Peepshow are actually good if u don't mind seeing a bit of skin. Keep an eye out for concerts when u go, sometime some of the Station Casinos off the strip (Red Rock, Palace, Green Valley, etc.) have some concerts come into town that u may want to see. As for free stuff, the usual Bellagio Fountains, M&M store, TI show, MGM Lions are just some of the stuff. If you like to hike and have a car rental, maybe a head on over to Red Rock State Park. There are some nice trails in through there or u can even just drive the loop and stop at some of the stops.
Hope that gives u some help.
