Default This is a rebuild

Conroy began his tenure with six UFAs - he extended the only one who’d been a lifelong Calgary Flame, and turned the other five into 15 assets, including four Russian/Belarussian NHLers, two 1sts, one (likely two) 2nds, and three prospect D.

There are only four Flames under contract longer than two years heading into next season.

Huberdeau - $10.5M (7Y)
Kadri - $7M (5Y)
Weegar - $6.25M (7Y)
Coleman - $4.9M (3Y)

They will have all their retention slots available once the season is over.

No key RFAs due major raises for at least another year.

Conroy can say “playoffs” all he wants - the goal for the players in the room should always be playoffs. They’re not getting paid to lose.

But this is a rebuild. There are 12 UFAs over the next two seasons, including both goalies, one of whom has already been in trade rumours for two months.

This doesn’t mean they’re going to trade all of them - Sharangovich works with Huberdeau - if he wants to stay for a fair contract, keep him. Same with Andersson - he’s a drafted Flame. If he wants to stay at a non-extortionist number, keep him by all means.

But they won’t keep them all, and the ones that aren’t kept are going to be traded. For 2nds, 3rds, 5ths, it doesn’t matter - they’ll be traded for something.

They can’t reasonably blow their brains out in UFA, since they just traded the five best UFAs on the market.

They don’t have a choice. They're in a rebuild.

Knowing everything about the way this organization does business, there’s no way they don’t want Tij Iginla - they have the assets to secure him if they choose.

I don’t think they’re going to want him to fail. I think they’re going to want to around him with another two draft’s worth of high picks, and be an ascendant team when their new building opens.

Don’t listen to what they say - they say a lot of things.

Look at what they’re doing.

What they’re doing is rebuilding

Management has obviously chosen to rebuild (even if they were forced into the decision). Majority of fans on this board, myself included wanted that. I hope people stay committed to the Flames and continue to support them (attending games, buying tickets etc). Going to be some lean times but ownership needs to know that fans are committed to the Flames and short term pain will hopefully turn into long term gains.

Very few of the FAs are going to want to stay when their deals come up so yeah it’s a rebuild whether they want it to be or not. The only way they’ll be able to fix it is to draft well.

What ever it is, they need to get a few picks at the top of the draft

These B level prospects are nice but ain’t going to change their fortune

I'm not fully convinced that management is fully convinced on rebuilding.

I do think Conroy is having to manage up quite abit.

They made a real effort to re-sign some of the key UFAs like lindholm, hanifin and tanev.

What they do in the offseason should be pretty telling though.

I really don’t think they’re going to have a choice. Without massive overpayments I think most of the FAs can see the writing on the wall. They’re going to want out, just like the last group.

I think this has been Conroy's plan from day 1. I think when he has attempted to sign players he has set a bar lower than the player is willing to accept and using that as an excuse to rebuild when the player says no. 0 budge it seems in contract talks too, sign he never really wanted to sign any of them.

I agree.

One way or the other they're headed for it. They're pretty much in it now.
It just depends how much they kick and scream and try to gurther fight it.
I'd argue they already have already delay it by two years.

You would have rebuilt two years ago? When they were in first place? They delayed by a year. Conroy has a plan and the owners are letting him implement the plan. He has loaded up on picks and likely will make a few more trades in the next 12 months and I expect those trades to also generate more picks and prospects.

Really like what he has done on the backend. If two of the 6 or 7 dmen he has picked up actually hit he has a quickly rebuilt backend.
