Since 7:00 am this morning (It's now 8:40) parts of Taipei have received over 50 mm of rain. The only month Calgary has exceeded 50mm of precipitation in the last year was June of 2018 when there was 67.7mm for the month. At the current rate it's coming down we should get to 67.7mm sometime shortly after 9:00 am.

According to the weather warning, this is the second-lowest level of rain warning "extremely heavy rain;" above this are "torrential rain" and "extremely torrential rain."

Enjoy that sunshine, Calgary.

edit: I just realized I was getting my data from the hourly precipitation not daily.

Hourly precipitation for most of Taipei is now over 70mm, with 90mm being the max. Daily varies between 140-190mm. So about as much as the total precipitation Calgary has received since last October.

High Level placed on evacuation alert at 11 AM this morning, due to wildfire. My ILs live there, lots of hubs' cousins & friends (he was born/raised in HL). Keeping in contact with the folks via cell, their power has been out since 9 AM. They're prepping stuff & loading the car, truck & utility trailer so they are gone if it changes to a mandatory evac. Fortunately they have lots of family out in La Crete so they'll have somewhere to stay if the need arises. Pops said a ton of fire depts/agencies from all over the area have arrived and they're setting up the big sprinklers all over town. Getting plenty worried now.

Well #### - this just popped up:

Quote:
Mackenzie County has issued a mandatory Evacuation Order for residents South and Southeast of the Town of High Level and South of the Bushe River Reserve due to wildfire threat. A State Of Local Emergency is now in effect for Mackenzie County.
I expect the order will come down for HL soon, at this rate.

Yeah. It's kind of a shame because it's a pretty nice city that is burdened with maybe the worst weather of any city in the world over 1 million people.

I feel like you complain about everything.

I love Calgary because we are quite hot for ~2.5 months with some 30 degree days and lots of sun, yet nights are cool (including mornings). We have distinct spring/fall even if that means we almost always get snow in them - they are generally mild. Chinooks in winter give us relief even compared to a few hours north of us.

Then again, I run (too hot is bad), ski/play hockey (need cold/snow), and golf/field sports (hot is fine but so is mild). We also don't get dumps of rain that interrupt these on the regular.

Maybe you need a hobby?

Is today the official beginning of smoke season?

Everything seems to have a familiar blue haze-y hue to it.

I'm not sure where it would be coming from yet. I think the big fires are up in High Level, and deep in BC, and not that many of them. The wind doesn't appear to be coming from either direction to bring it here:

Probably just moisture haze.

Its a bit odd, as the rivers/reservoirs are foggy this morning, but that is separate from the haze. Either some kind of inversion trapping the pollution or smoke.

I heard on the news this morning that we may be getting smoke in the next few days from the high level fires. Patterns changing. Right now it's still heading NW though.

Looks ok through the end of tomorrow, but the smoke does seem to be shifting south.

If BC consistently persists on being on fire can we at least insist that they get it over with?

You think Oil and Gas is bad for global warming, you should do a study about massive fires. Trees absorb a lot of the carbon out of our atmosphere, guess what happens when they burn?

I feel like it's been a rainy month.

As of yesterday we've had 39.3 mm of rain in May, compared to 32.5 in May 2018.

But the average for May is 51 mm so after today we'll probably be around that.

Been very nice for everything turning green, as well as long runs. Will be extra nice if we get some sun tomorrow!

I don't mind the rain at all, but this year it seems to have also been cold, without many nice days. Generally I'd say this years has been the worst Feb-May stretch I can remember. And it all started with 4x4 gloating about how nice the winter was back in January. So ya, it's all his fault.
