Well that seems extremely cheap for Sergachev.

Is he a UFA at the end?

Somebody should have offer sheeted Tampa.

It's ridiculous that NHL GMs are so afraid to leverage offer sheets.

Keep in mind, the players have to want to sign an offer sheet. I don't think I would want to leave the Lightning

The one big thing here is that Sergachev's final year of $7.2M means the Lightning will have to qualify him at $8.64M, which will either walk him directly to UFA status the following year or lead to a massive contract extension that probably overvalues him to the same point that this contract undervalues him.

EDIT: Nevermind (thanks to sureLoss)

Correct. For any contracts signed after July 10th, 2020.

That is different than what the MOU states. The MOU limits the QO to 120% of the average value of the contract.

Quote:
For SPCs signed after the date of this agreement, if the minimum
Paragraph 1 NHL Salary portion of a Player’s Qualifying Offer
would otherwise be greater than 120% of the Averaged Amount
of the SPC, the minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary portion of the
Qualifying Offer will instead be 120% of the Averaged Amount.

For example, if a Player has a 3 year SPC with Paragraph 1 NHL
Salaries of $3.0 million in Year 1, $6.0 million in Year 2, and $9.0
million in Year 3, the minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary portion
of the Qualifying Offer will be $7.2 million. If, however, such
Player’s 3 year SPC had Paragraph 1 NHL Salaries of $5.0 million
in Year 1, $6.0 million in Year 2, and $7.0 million in Year 3, the
minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary portion of the Qualifying Offer
will be $7.0 million.
So because Sergachev's final year $7.2 million would exceed 120% of the average value of $4.8 mil ($5.76 mil), Sergachev's QO would be $5.76 mil

Gonna be a great deal in year 3. This guy is on the ups.

On another note, people wishing them luck with their cap problems. I would love to be over the cap with only 19/23 signed if it meant the flames just won the cup.

Cirelli would look nice in Red. I dont think it's possible with all the moving pieces that would have to happen, but it would be nice.

Boston was in a perfect position to offer sheet Sergachev and he could have got paid and played on a contender. I hate TB.

I'm pretty sure the Lightning will keep Cirelli and move someone else from the roster. This guy is an elite 2-way player

They will end up ponying up to offload Johnson is my guess.

They are going to have to pay to unload Johnson and Killorn. In order to sign Cernak and Cirelli, who are both more important to the team.

Pretty solid contract. Sergachev keeps on the trajectory of developing into a top D. Good trade for Tampa when they got him. Looked good then, looks even better now.

A GM will cut off an arm to match if need be to show they aren’t vulnerable to future offer sheets. And the offering GM just created a new comp he has to bid against the next time he signs one of his own players. Could be collusion too but this alone is enough to dampen offers for RFAs in my view.
