We just came back from portland. If you plan on driving to the Spokane area, allow for about two hours to cross the border at yahk.

We went to cour d'alene (sp!!) and Spokane a few years ago. I did not think much of Spokane, but that being said, we did not do a lot of exploring.....I thought CDL was nicer.

If you are into driving, why not go to whitefish and then drive back via the road to the sun

Go to EMP ( Paul Allen responsible. Think it stands for Experience Music Project)

Eat at least one or several of Tom Douglas's restaurants. (Lola was already mentioned)

I wonder if your experience was the exception, and not the rule. We've come through that way several times, and each time was somewhat normal; between 5-15 minutes.

We also just got back from Portland last week, on a Sunday it took just over an hour to get through the Yahk crossing.

The week prior, it took an hour to cross at the Carway crossing south of Cardston into the Glacier area. That was on a Friday prior to the long weekend.

Yahk does get backed up on Sunday afternoons. In my experience.

And the other poster is right, Coeur D'Alene is nicer, but at only 20-30 minute drive between there and Spokane, I generally lump the two towns together. And it's much easier to get a hotel in Spokane.

Spokane may not be much to look at but its a fun city. Its a party town with lots of colleges in the area. I always have the best time there.

Just to add a little more to the border crossing. When we crossed into the us on the Saturday of the august long weekend. The line up was a mix of car and commercial trucks, and there was also a train idling at the crossing as well. The guy in line behind me, got out of line and was going to drive to creston.

I think there is some kind of app that gives you border waiting times; however, surprisingly at yahk there was no cellphone coverage for Rogers.

We crossed back into canada yesterday at around noon. There was a 10 minute wait for canada customs. And there was a long line of commercial trucks waiting for the us customs, it would have been frustrating for cars waiting in the middle of the line up as there were only a few cars in the queue close to the office, lineup was made longer by 60 foot rigs......

In the grunge days, there were lots of good pubs in the University District:
