Icon23 You're Ryan, say it aint Drew

Sam Reinhart's Trade Request Granted

After spending the past month on the trading block, Sam Reinhart got his wish answered late Wednesday night as the Hurricanes traded the struggling center to the San Jose Sharks along with defenceman Ryan Ellis. Both Reinhart and Ellis had fallen out of favour of the Hurricanes management and found their future with the organization diminishing as the season went on.

Joining the Hurricanes will be top defender Drew Doughty. The 'Canes are struggling in the goal scoring department and are hoping that Doughty's offensive prowess can spark the 'Canes offense. For now, Doughty will play with Erik Karlsson and will see Duncan Keith drop to the second unit and play alongside Kris Letang

Huge thanks to Dave for keeping up with the deal and hammering it out.

Hurricanes still in business to increase their scoring and will continue to make changes to the current team to accomplish that.

The deal
San Jose Sharks
Ryan Ellis
Sam Reinhart

Carolina Hurricanes
Drew Doughty
2nd 2020

Sharks have been hit or miss this year and not overly consistent. We are not overly happy with how the team overall has played outside a couple of guys. Doughty was our top D, blocked a ton of shots but didn't put up the points like we had hoped. He also didn't seem to gel with the other D that well either.

We have always liked Reinhart and have asked Doug about him before. Kudos for Doug for holding onto him as long as he did on that sweet contact; but he is going to need a raise. We also get Ryan Ellis but are not attached to him at all and he might be flipped.

Thanks Doug.

Interesting to look back during the summer. I traded Doughty to Dave for the 8th overall pick. The big difference was that I needed to move him and free up cap space. Mere months later he has been flipped, with a 2nd for a nearly PPG player and a good young dman.
Underscores that a really good strategy for building your asset base is to make sure you have cap space in the summer to leverage to acquire players at their lowest values and then flip them during the year for a better return. This is a shining example of that.

Yes/No

You seem to be ignoring other factors though. You're not taking into account the raises both Ellis and Reinhart will be getting in the offseason as well. A lot of cap management is done in the season just as well as teams shed cap in the offeason.

And while it is an asset to have cap in the offseason to leverage to acquire players you also have to have that 8th overall in this case

Teams are a lot tighter when both teams are trying to win and not one team taking advantage of the other throwing in the towel. Hockey deals still do need to happen IMO
