It's not just Texas, its all over the South too. Arkansas has started rolling blackouts. It's BAD down there.

Looks like it's going to start warming up on the weekend. I just checked Dallas weather real quick and it's -7 or so right now, by next Tuesday it will be +19. Still going to be bad for them for a few more days though.

That's crazy, I know we like to joke and call them weak whenever they get some winter (I'd be circled up in a ball crying if I lived in their heat, for what it's worth) but their infrastructure just isn't designed for it

Wait until they get their power bills thanks to unregulated power grids.

That Fort Worth crash with 70+ cars and trucks was something. The only thing that I didn't really understand was why the last 20 cars were coming in so hot when it's a straightaway and they must have known there was an issue. I tried to get to the bottom of that in the comments (maybe a blind rise?), but that was a twitterverse ####show. Five deaths, and cars piled on top of semis. Wild.

Not really.

Most Texans are on term electric plans. Everyone’s rate may be slightly different, but it is at least a fixed price for a defined term.

So the high spot electricity prices likely won’t affect most Texans.

And, besides, for the millions of Texans that currently don’t have power, at least their bill for these days will be zero.

No scarier feeling than being in the pile and hoping no one else joins it.

I look forward to them showing personal responsibility and solving it their way, by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. None of that begging for other people's money socialism crap for them. Maybe they could cut down on the Bud Light and BBQ to save some money.

Isn't this a bit of a unfair comparison? We might be fairly deregulated and "the same" as Texas in that sense, but we didn't disconnect ourselves from the larger grid like Texas did.

If Alberta looses production, we have the "battery" that is the Western Interconnection grid to support us and offset risk, theoretically driving down prices in times where local and semi-local production isn't meeting demand?

Not to mention, if random online posts are to be believe, Texas's grid is sup par as they don't need to meet US Federal Standards since it doesn't connect to out of state, increasing their direct risk as well.

Edit:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Interconnection

Quote:
The Texas Interconnection is maintained as a separate grid for political, rather than technical reasons,[1] but can also draw some power from other grids using ties. By not crossing state lines, the power grid is in most respects not subject to federal (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) regulation.[2]

About 10ish years ago I worked with a guy who went down to Houston for a sales trip and they had a little snow fall while he was there. He was telling me how crazy it got during this "storm". There was enough snow to just coat things, you could still see the grass through it, but it was enough to send the city into chaos. Cars were sliding all over the roads, people were scared to go out etc. He said the main reason was because they were not used to this so many people had next to bald tires and the little bit of snow was enough to cause havok. Just crazy from our perspective but that's Texas.

My buddy has been living in Houston for the last three years and he says it is a disaster right now. On Monday he told me they lost power for an hour but it came back on. He said that some people were being told it was going to be 8+ hours in the dark. Unfortunately things turned for the worse later that night. His power went out again and it still hasn't been restored. His furnace generate enough heat to hear their house. I told him that he should be worried about his pipes freezing and he mentioned that apparently some of his neighbors have already had that issue.
