I'm pretty sure there's a snowball's chance that the Mandarin was ever going to be like in the comics.
He didn't have to be. If Kingsley had been left as the terrorist he was claiming to be, under the name The Mandarin, it would have been totally fine.
Could have been just the latest person in a long line of people perusing/owning the 10 Rings, they themselves of Mandarin origin.
I remember that trailer and hearing "some people call me a terrorist, I consider myself a teacher." as the rockets in the helicopter unload on Tony's house. So awesome. Connecting it back to the organization that originally kidnapped him would have been much more palpable than introducing a whole new villain with a new backstory and a weak/lame one at that.

See, I don't think Thor 2 was necessarily bad, I just think it was so unmemorable and offered nothing to the franchise or MCU that it shouldn't have been made.
IM3 was legitimately bad. It neutered a great storyline (Extremis) and cool villain (Mandarin).
I don't get the hate for Thor 2. I thought it was much better than Thor 1. At that point Thor 2 was actually my favorite MCU movie except for Iron Man. The Winter Soldier and GotG came directly afterwards, so it has a lot to live up to.
Of the pre Thor 2 movies, I can why people would like Avengers better, but it's in par or better than the rest of the MCU films to that point.
So here is something I never thought I would be saying but.. Aquaman has officially crossed the 1 billion dollar mark world wide. Currently sitting 9th for all time comic book movies global sales.

The IM2 Whiplash storyline was neutered, to the point that Mickey Rourke publicly called out the studio.
In IM3, the original villain was to be Rebecca Hall, until the studio felt that a woman couldn't be convincingly evil, or a threat, and Guy Pearce was shoehorned in.
I always thought that it was kind of sad that the only films to be heavily altered in a negative way were the two attached to the lynchpin movie for the whole universe.

Oh I definitely wasn’t comparing those movies to IM3. I’m just saying calling Catwoman a classic and calling IM3 the best in the MCU are equally ridiculous. I also didn’t want to be seen picking on DC so thought I better include a Marvel film.
Personally I can’t decide if IM3 or Thor 2 is the worst MCU film.
Its Iron Man 3 and its really not all that close.
Again, in light of Nadal's new 'Box Office' thread, 'Earnings' is a very flawed measure of quality.
Iron Man 3 made craptons of money.

How was Whiplash neutered? Don't remember anything about that
There used to be quite a few articles that were easy to find, as I remember one from Hollywood Reporter or a magazine of repute, but now they are not popping up transparently on google.
Critically acclaimed actor, Mickey Rourke spent months researching and preparing for the role of Ivan Vanko in ‘Iron Man 2’. In the 2010 sequel, Rourke said he spent the time trying to develop a more rounded character. But, was extremely upset when the scenes he filmed ended up on the cutting room floor. In an interview he revealed that he is not too happy with Marvel studios. “I’m not a Marvel fan… I did, once, a movie for Marvel… and they cut the whole ######ing thing out…”
It was also pointed out that Kate Mara was pretty much removed from the film, with only one scene left in. Most people wouldn't even remember that she is in the universe.
when Black was developing the film, Killian was going to be gender swapped, but Black was forced by certain Marvel execs to make the character male for fear of negatively impacting toy sales.
Splitting one character into two reduces the impact of both, clearly. Instead of a strong female antagonist, we are left with 'meh'. The nonsense surrounding Iron Man is one of the things that led to the end of Ike Perlmutter, so I guess that part worked out for the best.

I remember before Iron Man 3 came out people were saying Ben Kingsley's performance as the Mandarin rivaled Heath Ledgers as the Jokers. I was skeptical but about half way through I was really digging the movie. Then the twist came out and it was like all the air came out of the balloon. Such a missed opportunity, and since it may be the last solo Iron Man film we get with RDJ it hurts even more, he deserved better to go out on. Having the Mandarin make fart and poop jokes and an actor is worse than Arnold's Mr. Freeze. It was not ice to see
Tom Cruise announced they'll be filming two Mission Impossible sequels back to back with Christopher McQuarrie returning as director for both, to be released Summer 2021 and 2022. Very cool, Fallout was the best in the franchise and I can't wait to see how they push the action move envelope next!
