This is true, but when you have no elite players, you also need to ice the best possible lineup and you end up not being able to afford losing a Monahan or a Backlund or a Ryan or a Dube because you end up with too many holes in the lineup.

I would have liked to see this. It’s an obvious option to everybody not named Geoff Ward

There is always a causality or two when a new head coach takes over, someone who just doesn't fit their system.
By my count, it is more like 20 or so.

This is the Derek Ryan I remember (and really like).

Hell of a performance tonight. Flames need him to keep doing that.

Crazy how much better the PK and fourth line play with him in the lineup. Incredible first game back.

Derek Ryan is an important bottom 6er for us.

Derek Ryan is one of my favourite Flames and is underrated by many.

Great to see him back

Sutter'll love Ryan. I see him being used like Dave Lowry.

Derek Ryan won’t put up 2 points every game, but he will give you a solid effort on both ends of the ice, effective PK work, and the ability to win faceoffs. He should fit in well with Sutter.

I also like how he makes his teammates better. His first year it was Mangiapane and Hathaway. Last year it was Dube and Lucic. Early returns with him and Ritchie are promising as well. Maybe we see Bennett on the other wing?

Lost in all of this hoopla is an excellent game by Doc. Love this guy, hope the team finds a way to re-sign him. I’m also still a little sour about not getting Reider back.

Sutter didn't reference many players by name in his media availability today but had a nice shout out to Ryan. Adds so much to the bottom six. The team missed him more than I think we realized and I agree completely with those who refer to Ryan as being underrated.

Based on the presser I think they are going to go with the same lineup as Thursday?

Sutter out and out said he didn’t see why they’d change it. Though I imagine Markstrom starts.

On a line with the much maligned Josh Leivo, and the even more maligned Sam Bennett, Ryan has two primary assists — his second two-point game in his last four outings.

Derek Ryan is pretty good.

Thank goodness for Ryan's cap hit keeping him from getting claimed on waivers. Treeliving is playing 5D chess.

I like Ryan because you don't notice him. He's like Gelinas was ....and when you need a dependable guy that he team mates love....he's right there.
