Leaving them with what, 2 million to sign Marner? Must be another trade incoming. Nylander on the way out?

That leaves 3M to sign Marmer...and 5.3M more room to go over the cap once the season starts with LTIR kicking in for Horton.

I hope someone pounces on a Marner offer sheet today.

Is that 2 million before or after accounting for Horton's ltir?

Does that mean the leafs have to be under the (with Horton's cap hit counting to the total tally) for the start of the season and can only use the ltir cap relief after the season starts?

I get confused about this every frigin year.

What’s their D look like now for the upcoming season? Any need for Brodie still? Brodie + 1st + 3rd for Nylander? Maybe have a team retain salary on Brodie to help TO for the Marner contract?

They aren’t trading Nylander for 1 year of Brodie when they already have 2 D expiring at the end of the year.

Brodie for Nylander!

Just kidding, I don't think it'll happen. I expect Toronto will trade Nylander and Horton to a team with lots of cap space for a cheaper, right-handed defenceman.

Yeah that's my thoughts too.

Put in something like a 12.5 million offer sheet. It's palatable for a team with cap space like the NYI but crushing for the Leafs.

Four first late rounders is a tough price to pay but worth it for Marner.

I don't think the Leafs would match.

Oh if the Islanders did this, ultimate Tavares payback

According to cap friendly, leafs have 3.7M space before ltir for Horton. That is also with 13f and 8d, so after sending down a minimum and ltir Horton they could give about $9.7M. but that is firm on the cap with 8 skaters and backup goalie all making within 100k of minimum, and Dermott being the only ELC defenceman up. Start factoring in Lillegren, Sandin, then that shaves a little more off.

So either they try to squeeze Marner down to closer to 9M, bridge him, or make a trade

Once factoring in Horton's LTIR and the fact the Leafs are likely going with a 22 man roster the Leafs have about 10 million to sign Marner.

That is the limit for Marner pretty much. Aho just got 8.5 I think it's a little ridiculous that Marner would be upset with 10 million per season. If someone want to offer sheet him at 11.5 you just take the draft licks and offer sheet Tkachuk for 9.5.

You think Tkachuk would be interested in saying with his buddy Matthews?

Tkachuk has to sign that offer sheet which he wouldn't. He wants to be a Flame, he isn't rocking the boat for a little extra money.

Yup. And they'd get another star player.

I could see Lou doing this since he was going hard after Panarin and willing to pay him according to reports 12.5.

Teams leading scorer the last 2 seasons...3rd highest paid.

Yeah I can see where he would not be happy with that.

Oh, and to add...was not given Schedule B bonuses on his ELC, so im guessing he is a little chapped with missing out on that 2 million as well.

Once the offer hits the 4 first round range it gets hard to match. Hitting $11.5M would be nigh on impossible

I know this will be well received...

For all the people saying the Leafs are screwed. They need to sign one player and have 10 million in cap.

Unless I'm missing something the Flames have 9.5 in capspace and still need to sign at least two RFA forwards and an RFA goalie who should.be expecting a nice raise.

Difference being that the flames have extra pieces ie. frolik, brodie/hamonic that could be moved to clear space. Leafs are sorta stuck with what they have so fitting in 11 million is gonna be tough. Flames aren't necessarily better, both teams are gonna be in tight to make it work.

I assume this is the negotiation tactic the Leafs will be going to other teams with in order to clear cap space:
