Trading away draft picks constantly will do that to you. The prospect pool is as weak as its ever been in my time following this team. It's going to look straight up abysmal once Valimaki, Kylington and Dube graduate. Probably bottom 5 in the NHL if we are being honest with ourselves.

Mangiapane is more graduated than Dube. He was recalled at the end of November and, except for a couple games in Stockton over the all-star break, was in the NHL fulltime for the rest of the season.
Dube only played 2 NHL games after January 2, and those were the final 2 regular season games after everything was clinched.

And, I'm thinking all will be considered graduates by the end of this year.

All this talk about a bad farm system just has me thinking of how many graduates there are on the club that just posted 107 points.

Yeah Flames drafting & development has been much better even though there have been some misses.
Gaudreau
Backlund
Bennett
Tkachuk
Monahan
Mangiapane
Dube
Jankowski
Hathaway
Giordano
Brodie
Valimaki
Andersson
Kylington
Rittich
Big pieces of last years team all drafted / developed internally by the team.

I think we’ve done well turning a rebuild into a contender with lots of prospects graduating and contributing while having minimal top end free agency adds.

It's partly because the Flames have graduated a lot of prospects recently. Treliving said in a post-draft interview that they have graduated more prospects to the NHL in the past two seasons than any other team.

I don't think any of those are suggesting a poor system, just the current state of our prospect group, which is less than impressive at the moment. You can have a good farm system but still have a poor prospect pool. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

And they have traded too many picks in the last 3 drafts as as well.
2017: No 2nd or 3rd
2018: No 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
2019: No 2nd
That's 6 pieces that would probably figure into the top 15 of a list like this.

For sure. If a temporarily tepid group of prospects is the result of the previous group graduating to the main team, that is a good thing. And, maybe it's not that tepid. Just seems a bit lackluster compared to years past.

I don’t think a weak prospect list is the same thing as a bad farm system
Also don’t think weak is the right word. Top heavy maybe. It’s more of a function of lack of draft picks than it is due to short comings at the development level

It seems as though some of you would prefer the NHLs #1 prospect pool and have the team finish 5th worst.
I'm quite happy with the Flames finishing top of the league (and are setup to do so for at least the next few years) than have the league's best prospect pool.
The picks were (generally) traded for players whom helped us win! And Hammer will continue to help us this season! As will the other graduates.
Klimchuk, Poirier, Shinkaruk etc might have looked good on paper but never helped the Flames win!
I do still hope one of the goalies pans out long-term though....

Andersson - graduates for sure
Mangiapane - feels graduated to me. I see him now as an NHLer. I wouldn't strongly object to him being still a prospect though
The rest, including Juso and Kylington I would say are all prospects still.

If we graduate Valimaki, Kylington and Dube next season we'll probably be one of the youngest teams in the league next year so I'm not as concerned about the prospect pool being a bit weaker.
Agree that 41 games is a good cut off also.

In a hypothetical, would Valimaki still be a prospect if he didnt get the high ankle sprain? I'd call him graduated.

Maybe we should have a poll to decide who's graduated and who hasn't...of the 5 or 6 players that are being considered for graduation.

I like the idea of a prospect being defined as someone with Calder eligibility. Must be 25 and under with 25 or less games last year or less than 6 games each of the last two years.
Edit: This makes Valimaki and Dube eligible (barely) with Kylington and Mangiapane graduated.

Can we start the voting after the prospect camp? Gives everyone a better perspective
