Blackhawks reacquire Andrew Shaw + 7th from Montreal for 2nd, 3rd, 7th
Canadiens Montréal @CanadiensMTL
The Canadiens have acquired Chicago’s 2nd round pick and 7th round pick in 2020, and the Blackhawks’ 3rd round pick in 2021, in return for forward Andrew Shaw and the Canadiens’ 7th round pick in 2021.
Eric Engels @EricEngels
Andrew Shaw has three more years at $3.9 M aav. I’m told Habs did not retain any salary in the deal for three draft picks. A sign they’ll be players in free agency.

Andrew Shaw would have been what Calgary needs.
It shows the value today of having cap space, you can pick up decent players for cents on the dollar.
Shaw is a good player signed for 3 prime years on a nice contract.
It wasn’t highway robbery, but it also wasn’t a first round pick.

Cents on the dollar? Not sure that characterizes this trade.
A 2nd, 3rd and 7th is pretty close to being the same value as a late 1st.
Chicago gave up good value in the draft picks.

Chicago traded Shaw for 2 2nd round picks, used one to pick Debrincat, and got him back for a 2nd and 3rd.

3 years ago. Instead of being in the midst of his prime, he’s a player now nearing the end of it. Trading him for 2 2nds and getting him back for a 2nd and 3rd is about as “same value” as you can get.
Far far far from “pennies on the dollar”

It is absolutely pennies on the dollar and a likely mid second and third is not remotely close to the value of a 1st round pick.
If Shaw were a free agent he would be a candidate for something like 5 years at 5M+
The value in the trade is being able to get a good player at a good term, and ages 28,29,30 are very sensible on the age curve.
Considering at the deadline teams pay more in assets for 25 games of a player, this feels like a really solid use of extra assets and space.
Fwiw, the second being traded here was originally acquired for Shaw in the first place... Montreal may have been over a barrel here to get that pick back if the offer sheet rumours are try and explain why the hawks were seemingly able to get a deal here.

Both 2nds the Canadiens gave up to acquire Shaw were for the 2016 draft (Chad Krys and Alex DeBrincat).
Everything I have seen is that the 2nd acquired is Chicago's 2020 2nd.

He is 27, not 33 LOL. He’s 2 years older than a Johnny.
Wait til you see what comparable players get tomorrow.

How is Johnny or what people get paid in free agency relevant to a 28 year old middle-six winger’s trade value?

Meh Shaw is not nearly what he used to be.

The 'Hawks now have a guy that is willing to take a beating in the goal mouth...One of the reasons for their dismal PP in recent years.
I see him as a utility player that can plug in anywhere to fill for injuries, but, is probably destined to be a regular on line 3 and on the #2PP.

Seems like the Canadiens have some draft picks to spend, and some cap space to burn.

I think this is a good trade for the Hawks, and that they have done very well through the FA silly-season.
