Avs sign Cale Makar
As expected the Avs have signed 2017 4th OA pick, Hobey Baker winner, and Calgarian Cale Makar to his ELC.
He is joining the Avs immediately and therefore burns a year of his contract and eligible to play for the Avs in the playoffs. If he plays a game in the playoffs it will make him eligible for the upcoming expansion draft.

It will be interesting to see if Valimaki gets into the lineup. Same draft class, I’m sure he’d love to play against Makar.
Fantenberg seems a little slow to deal with the speedy Avs forwards.

It would be very dumb by the flames to not use Valimaki

Great...now the Avs will be adding an ultra dynamic puck moving defenseman, that shouldn’t help them at all....

Well he may be able to slide right into Girards spot.

Rookie that's never played a NHL game let alone a pro game forced into the lineup in a pivotal game during playoffs against the number one team in the west.
It also forces the Avs to protect him in the expansion draft.
Win win.

we'll see... kid is clearly talented.
stepping in as a defenseman in the NHL playoffs is a significant jump up...

I personally was hoping this wouldn’t happen. He’s a really good player.
He isn’t going to make the series go one way or another though. Yet.

Excellent give him his welcome to the NHL moment by leaving a smoking Makar shaped hole in the boards.

Great the Avs are adding a dynmaic puck moving defensemen to their lineup that's never played against NHL speed or power. I doubt he see's anything more then some power play time, because putting a college kid out on a regular shift against NHL players is just asking to be a mismatch.
This isn't a fourth line winger coming up from college that you can hide in your lineup. The Flames have good skill and speed and firepower on all lines.

He also hasn't practiced with team yet, learned their systems, or been involved in opposition video prep and scouting. Don't think there's anything to worry about. Quite the opposite.

Yeah normally I would say that’s fine and dandy, but the Flames have looked awful through 2 games to me. There’s been some decent stretches, but not nearly enough for a 1 vs 8 match up. Cale Makar should help the Avs even more so on the puck moving side and on their PP that hasn’t capitalized yet. So that’s a scary thought right there. I can’t imagine him just completely sucking based on what I’ve seen from him.
I would love to see him turn the puck over a bunch and for us to take advantage though, that would be fantastic.

Kid who's never played a game is going straight to the powerplay?

He’ll help them but I can’t help but feel his impact on this series will be negligible. I could be totally wrong about that, but this doesn’t make me fear them any more or any less.

Probably a downgrade on Girard for many of the reasons listed above (no experience in the the league or with the team) but still an upgrade on their extra dmen (Barberio, Graves, etc.)
I expect to see something along these lines
Zadorov-Barrie
Makar-Johnson
Cole-Nemeth

It sounds like he’ll eventually be a good player for them, but if I’m an Avs fan my expectations would be very low right now. NCAA defencemen don’t just step in and play on a new team and in a new system, especially in the playoffs. He’ll likely be given limited sheltered minutes until he gets comfortable — don’t want him getting torched before he even has a chance to figure things out.

Can you imagine being in your first NHL game and grabbing the puck behind your own net only to look up and see Sam Bennett bearing down on you? Lol.
