Thumbs up (Womens Hockey) Finland Upsets Canada, reaches Final

Small news during the Stanley Cup, but huge news in womens hockey.

Finland just upset Canada 4-2 in the World Championships, in Finland, for a place in the final.

It's the first time Finland reaches the final in either World Championships or the Olympics, and the first time Canada doesn't reach the final. It's also the first time the World Championship final is not between USA and Canada. (Sweden once reached the final in the Olympics.)

Shots were 45-19 for Canada.

USA and Russia meet later today to decide the other finalist.

Wow, great for Finland though. Hopefully it encourages more and more women/girls of Finland to get into hockey.

This is great for international hockey. Have a finals matchup that isn't automatically Canada/USA is a good sign that the rest of the world development may be catching up a little.

Likely a fluke, and not going to become a more regular occurrence, but would be nice to see the field become more competitive.

Women’s hockey needs some good news like this. Congrats to the Finnish ladies. Now beat the evil US women please.

Nice work Finland!

That's a huge accomplishment for them. I think it's time there was a bit more competitiveness in the Women's tournament.

It's always hard to say how much everything is a "fluke". If you're not that far behind, you should win a game every now and then. People around Team Finland felt they had a good team this year.

Obviously they were the underdog, but having watched the game they beat Canada with the way these things typically happen: better goaltending, better special teams (2 PP goals, killed minute and a half of 5-on-3), solid team defense. I felt the shots also exaggerated the difference in that game.

People in Finland are hoping this becomes the "Calgary Moment" for womens hockey.

(In the 1988 olympics Finland beat USSR in the last game of the tournament to snatch their first ever medal, a silver. This is often considered a turning point (along with the success of Jari Kurri etc. in the NHL), after which the next generation of Finnish hockey players started to believe they could reach the top of the world in hockey and be serious contenders in international games. They've won 18 medals in various adults competitions since then. Mostly from 1994 forward.)

Final goes to OT, 1 - 1.

I think it's fair to say beating Canada wasn't a fluke, Finland has a good team.

They'd lose a best in seven, but they can win this game.

Kari Eloranta is finland assistant coach. Let see if they win, or do disallow goal.

Video conference is taking forever. It's pathetic. There's nothing unclear in the situation, a ref should be able to make the call instantly, one way or the other.

WTF is going on here? The goal is called off because the USA got a penalty? This makes no sense

Goal disallowed, players collect their stuff.and things continue with Finlands PP.

Apparently the play was called dead before Finland scored, only reason I can think of. No explanation given.

This is laughable.

Clear goal, very suspicious circumstances to disallow that. The Finns should walk off the ice in protest.

I've found worse refs then NHL refs. How did the play not get blown down when the USA player touched the puck in the neutral zone?
