We call that Saskatchewan.

Is it not illegal to use studded tires in the summer?

Studs really suck on bare, wet roads. I would notice the traction difference on dry roads if I was driving really spirited sure, but on wet roads it was hard to ignore unless I was driving like my mother was in the car.
####ing deadly when they’re needed though.

Nope.
I'm given to understand that it wears the heck of out them, nearly destroying them, but there's no laws against it.

Can confirm. Didn't cause any issues in the summer at this point.

'Getting worse': Task force on downtown safety promises early action
About a week after its first meeting, the Downtown Safety Leadership Table won’t be wasting time in zeroing in on the social disruption and security issues facing a city core partly hollowed-out by the 2014 economic downturn and the subsequent pandemic, said Mark Garner.
“This couldn’t be a more top-of-mind issue for many,” said co-chair Heather Morley, executive director of Inn From the Cold, a non-profit that provides emergency housing for families.
Fear for her personal safety downtown haunts Dawn Stewart, who fought off an attacker who followed her out of an elevator at her workplace six years ago.
Last April, Stewart thought she was about to be assaulted again when a man who appeared to be on drugs ran towards her while she was walking in the Eau Claire area.
“I actually try to work from home as much as I can because of that … I still have PTSD a bit over (the earlier incident),” said Stewart, 47.
“I won’t take the train at all, so we spend a lot of money parking.”
In recent years, Inn From the Cold moved its main operations into Calgary’s downtown, where clients and staff see first-hand the safety concerns plaguing the area, said Morley.
There are already provincial and city initiatives examining safety issues in the city’s downtown, though Mayor Jyoti Gondek has said the leadership table, consisting of police, education, social advocacy, real estate and Indigenous representatives, will provide actionable solutions.
Assault survivor Stewart said she’s skeptical about the merits of the Downtown Safety Leadership Table.
“What I find is they put these task forces together only to really show it’s not a problem,” she said.
“I don’t think the people who are doing these things really want to know.”

I'm lucky to put on 5k these days. That was an old photo from back when I was a poor student, and had the old family MPV. I think after the last winter I drove them all summer because the summers were shot, and those had already done many winters. Then the van rusted to pieces.

Yes, there is some legislation about not damaging the roads, but I think it'd be rough to prove that Joe Average's tire studs did it. I always thought that legislation was more aimed at truckers using tire chains doing road damage. I imagine that unless the officer in question saw the vehicle in question doing damage, it would be nearly impossible to prove in court.

Wasn’t sure where to put this. Note that there isn’t any mention of drugs or anything, yet.

I'm going to a wake tonight for a guy I went to high school with who died around the weekend.
I'd lost tough the last 20 years, but he's been troubled basically all that time--to the point where you just avoided him cause it was always about money or a toxic and mentally, emotionally draining exchange.
I feel so bad for the family. It's too easy to get pissed off at the guy laying on the sidewalk downtown, propped up against a building, and to condemn them as a hapless loser. They're somebody's somebody, and that's easy to forget.
