Goes against managements philosophy of building a perennial contender. He deserved a chance to show how good he could’ve been. Instead dealt. I think this one will come back to haunt them in particular. No idea about Varsho but seems like it fills no holes. Wtf.

I hate the trade. Absolutely hate it.
For me it was to decide who stays between Teo and Lourdes, not trade both.

I was today years old when I heard of Daulton Varsho. I hope Atkins just didn't make a stupid move to get another outfielder.

Wow, will be curious to hear the Jays take on this one....
Lots to give up for sure, however I am not familiar with Daulton Varsho

Glad I'm not the only one who's never heard of Varsho before today.
One thing Friedman always says is that organizations know their own prospects the best. Hopefully they know something about Moreno that helps rationalize this move. And it's not like they're left with scrubs to fill the catcher position as it is.
I'll take a wait-and-see approach here.

Just because a player isn't well known doesn't make it a bad trade. Feels like the reaction here is overdramatic. 4.9 WAR last season & as elite defensively in the outfield as they come. Plus he brings the lefty bat people have been long asking for to balance out the lineup.
Jays may not overwhelming win this trade longterm but it's certainly not an awful move.

It doesn’t matter if the Jays didn’t think much of Moreno. All prospect watchers think highly of him enough that there are probably 25 GMs who likely do as well. To sell low on him is a terribly sad situation as a Jays fan.

If it was Moreno for Varsho, I could kind of get behind it but including Gurriel isn’t good.
The Jays need to replace the output of Gurriel and Hernandez now and Varsho only replaces a decent amount of Hernandez’s production.
Not a fan of this. It’s nice to add a lefty hitter but, even with Kiermaier and Varsho, it is still an unbalanced lineup but a less deep one. At the same time, the organization is also SIGNIFICANTLY weaker to add at the deadline.

It’s not the Jays fault you guys haven’t heard of Varsho, nor does that make this a bad trade.
4.9 WAR, big LH bat and excellent defender. And only 26, controllable until 2027.
Yes Moreno is a steep price, but this is a great acquisition.

If they had to add to get this guy, wish they had added Biggio instead of Lourdes.
Will wait and see I guess

What apparent is they’re suddenly valuing defence and LH bats more than anything. If they’re wrong and have overvalued these things they’re in a world of difficulty. Bichette and Gurriel are their only young bats to build around. Good trade material is gone.

Did the Jays fear they couldn’t re-sign Gurriel?

We had a chance to deal from a major strength to address a major weakness.
That has to be taken in to account when looking at this deal.
I’d say Arizona got the better overall value, but the Jays as a team got better for this season and next.
When Jansen becomes a FA after next season, we won’t look as good.
I’m happy we are keeping Jansen & Kirk around. I was hoping Moreno would be the one to be dealt, between the 3.

Biggio’s place in the lineup will be interesting. Can’t imagine him getting much outfield time - maybe he’ll be rotate with Espinal at 2B, Guerrero at 1B, and DH.
As of today what would the batting lineup look like?
Springer
Bo
Varsho
Guerrero
Kirk
Chapman
Kiermaier
Espinal/Biggio
Jansen
