Enormous amount of iTunes Duplicates on PC

Does your iTunes have an emormous amount of duplicates?

Mine did, with 10+ gigs worth. I searched high & low for a solution, and found this simple script.

"DeDuper" http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp#DeDupe

Simply select the EXACT duplicates, by pressing and holding SHIFT, then click on "VIEW" in the menu-bar, and select "Show Exact Duplicate Items"

Then, open & run the script you just downloaded. You won't notice anything for a couple minutes while it compiles. It will then give you an option to delete the duplicates found.

I just did it, and it worked perfectly, and figured this would be handy for others.

Exact duplicate meaning same file name, format, size, album, etc.? I have some files in multiple formats (mp3 and AAC) as my old Classic is running out of space. I also don't mid having a duplicate song if I have it from the original album and then a compilation, for example.

Me too. The regular duplicate function only identifies by artist & song.

"Show Exact Duplicate Items", identifies by artist, song AND Album.

Who uses lossy iTtunes? I prefer wav or wma format

Not to derail, but OP asked the question. There are tons. Winamp, Mediamonkey, Foobar are all personal favourites of mine. I still stick with Winamp all these years later. I find it's quite functional and feature rich.

The best way to listen to music is when it's uncompressed. Itunes and the MP3 format don't offer that.

I'm old school. Winamp.
Will not have any Apple software on any of my devices.

I personally tried itunes 4-5 years ago when the Wife won an ipod, it was a pain in the ass then (on PC / XP).
Not too mention the countless "fixing" of friends and families PC's that also used itunes. Can't be bothered anymore.

I bought the first gen iPod 10+ years ago, and tried to hack it so I could continue using Winamp back then. Thought I bricked it, restored it and been fully entangled since. Read that Winamp isn't being updated anymore, what's the consensus there?

Would you still suggest Winamp?
Caveat: I have an iPhone 5.

MP3, no, (although 192 or higher is pretty close for anything outside of audiofile gear, IMO) but what do you mean itunes doesn't offer lossless? You can use wav files in itunes, or apple's lossless codec. The only one that won't run natively is FLAC.

I still use Winamp. A new version was released only a few months ago. I believe it is discontinued, but I wouldn't be surprised to see someone take a stab at reviving it with support and updates. For using it with an iPod, and transferring music and videos, I use a program called copytrans. It's a workaround for pretty much any apple product so you don't have to use apple software on a PC. I have the newest version iPod and I can confirm that copytrans is compatible with it.

If an unsupported Winamp makes you nervous, foobar2000 is huge and has a massive following and is completely customizable, mediamonkey is decent and something like Clementine is quite popular and does the job just fine.

The hate people have for iTunes is typically for iTunes on a PC - it's horrible. iTunes on an Apple is a different story.

I guess this comes down to the "devil I know" vs "what i don't know, i don't know"

iTunes is working pretty much fine for me. I know it quite well, and run a pretty fast machine, that doesn't get bogged down by it.

The biggest argument for any change --- TIME. iTunes on my PC now, isn't costing me time. I load new media easily both to my PC, iTunes, and iPhone.

Implementing, and learning a new platform requires considerable (albeit, unknown) amount of time.

That said, I do have reservations about iTunes.
- Can't open a second window.
- Can't play FLAC.
- Creating duplicate files.
- Baaaasically, limited to one machine to manage my iPhone.
