Question Mounting Vs. Placing TV On Wall Shelf

Hey all,

So probably very stupid string of questions as I'm a n00b when it comes to these things, but thought I'd ask CP faithful.

I recently purchased a Samsung UN40FH6030 40" TV, which weighs in at 20lbs and is 36.5" x 21.6" x 3.7" (width, height, depth).

I live in a condo that has aluminum studs (no wooden studs), and originally I was going to wall mount it with this wall mount Secura 26" - 47" Tilting Flat-Panel TV Wall Mount (QMT15-B2).

But now I'm thinking of using the following IKEA wall shelf unit (EKBY GRUVAN) and the following wall brackets (EKBY VALTER), maybe 2 or 4 of those brackets to place into the wall and instead of regular screws using toggle bolts from Home Depot to keep them in the wall.

Does the above seem feasible, to place the 20lb TV on a shelving unit secured by 2 (or 4?) brackets placed in the wall by toggle bolts?

Let me know, thanks guys!

What about something like this?

http://www.costco.ca/Majestic-47-in....100037172.html

I bought something similar to this, but smaller at Walmart one year for $40. You can usually find them for less than $100. I've had my 37" hung on there for the last 4 years without issues.

It's for a bedroom so unfortrunately space is at a premium.

I would mount it using toggle bolts like these http://www.powers.com/pdfs/plastic/togglebolt.pdf

Each one is rated for well in excess of what you require, and you will probably end up using four.

I would wall mount it for sure, over using a shelf.

Butterfly toggles are such a pain in the butt. Installing them can be tricky and if you take the mount off the wall, say to paint, then you lose the clip. Recently I mounted my TV using snaptoggles from Home Depot...

http://www.toggler.com/products/snaptoggle/overview.php

More expensive, but much easier to use and are rated for more weight than butterfly toggles of the same bolt thickness. I mounted an 80lb TV recently - I only had one wood stud centered behind the TV so I used snaptoggles on either side. The TV pulls out about 15" from the wall and it's not a problem.

To the OP, in my opinion mounting a shelf and putting a TV on it will probably look odd. The shelf might be a good idea for a soundbar underneath a wall-mounted TV, though.

Okay, you guys have convinced me that wall mounting is the way to go.

I'll use that Secura mount that I have already purchased to mount the TV.

Question if I use that mount should I use more snap-toggle bolts than recommended to keep the TV up? Or use the standard 4 for it's 200x200 rated size?

You will be fine with 4. I have mounted much heavier TV's on articulated mounts with 4. 20lb is not very heavy.

Just an update,

Mounted that bad boy with the Secura Mount, 5 toggle bolts, one on each corner and a snap toggle in the centre top area and it looks great1

Thanks for the tips and advice everyone!

Anyone ever done this into ICF? My party wall is ICF, so there's not really studs, just concrete and styrofoam with drywall over top.

There are 1/4 inch plastic ties about every 8 inches in the ICF blocks beneath your sheetrock. They are rated to hold several hundred pounds each. We've got cabinets hung on them.

Some stud finders can detect them, but not mine. You can measure from a corner to find where the ties are supposed to be. Another trick is to use a small magnet to find your drywall screws. They're inserted in the ties. The next "stud" will be 8 inches away.

Has anyone bought the snaptoggles in Calgary? Home Depot and Lowes don't appear to carry them.

I have bought them at HD before at 130th. They are typically sold out though and are tucked up near the end of the aisle.

They don't show up online, but I've purchased snap toggles at Home Depot by Chinook and the Lowes at Crowfoot.

I've hung 3 tv's, a 52, 60, and 70 using molly bolts directly into the steel studs. I'm paranoid about anchoring directly to drywall. The 70 is only on 2 studs with 4 bolts just given how I wanted the TV centered and where the studs were located and it's been fine.

I can't find them on the Home Depot website, but I've purchased them both from the HD in the NE and the one by Chinook.
