Default Possible Windows Update Problem

Hey there folks,

Have a computer problem I was hoping you may help me out with. My mom's laptop is 'stuck' in making an update every single time it's shut down. Obviously it doesn't appear to be doing anything, or finishing the update. Appears to be the exact same one each time.

In trying to resolve this problem I've run a full scan of the antivirus (Kaspersky) and performed a manual windows update. The antivirus scan actually seemed to help for a few days, but it went back to the exact same pattern. The windows update didn't appear to do anything.

I think it is a windows update problem because (I believe) it first started after a large automatic windows update.

Any thoughts beside reinstall/format?

Is it an update for Office by chance? I was having the same problem. I rebooted into safe mode and tried the update and that worked.

No, she doesn't have Office. Just Word. Unless it's a problem with the Word update portion. Although I would still doubt it.

Windows XP? There was a thing a while ago where an update broke Windows Update that made it go to 100% CPU when it tried to run. I had to disable checking for updates on a virtual machine I use for testing sometimes to get it to actually be runnable.

I haven't tried to fix it yet.

Google tool bar caused this problem for me. Uninstall and it was good to go.

I would try clearing the update cache:
To stop the service you can use command "net stop wuauserv"
To delete cache please remove all files in c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
To start the service use command "net start wuauserv"

Or there is a Microsoft tool that will repair windows update.

Ahhh yeah sorry, shoulda specified it's windows 7.

I don't think she has the google tool bar, but I'll check, when she first got the computer she got sucked into all those crappy downloads.

I'll try a few of these other remedies if applicable.
