Default computer/networking assistance please

Not being a techy, I was hoping to get some help mapping a connection to an external hard drive that I hooked up to my wireless router.

I'd like to be able to login remotely from anywhere to that hard drive to get files/movies etc.

I tried googling it but it seems the methods shown are somewhat outdated.

I have a Linksys EA6500 smart wifi router.

I just dont know how to map a connection to it.

Help?

I think the "smart wi-fi" feature only allows you to access the remote management (setup, bandwidth shaping, user access features) function from an external network, but not your media server. That router likely won't do what you're asking. You may need to find some kind of 3rd party firmware that enables it.

hmm..well I was able to hook up the external hard drive to it and I can see it in under the USB storage when I log in to the router.

Yeah looking at the routers info page http://www.linksys.com/en-eu/products/routers/EA6500 and FAQ, the remote login only lets you change router settings, but doesn't mention anything about accessing the media server remotely.

Again though, there may be a 3rd party firmware that allows this.

It does have a VPN passthrough feature, so you could assumedly set one up and access the media server through that...

I would set up Plex to access media before dealing with a VPN, its pretty painless to setup and use.

If it is non-media files, you could use Dropbox/Skydrive/Google Drive
