The Flames' alumni roster in NHL 20 is terrible
So as I understand it, EA Sports has decided to include alumni teams for every franchise in NHL 20. It's a neat idea. I'm a sucker for hockey history and it'd be really cool to face-off in historical best-on-best matchups.
Well... about the best-on-best part...
According to this Reddit thread ( https://www.reddit.com/r/CalgaryFlam...medium=ios_app), this is the Flames' alumni team in the new game. Tell me if you think anyone is missing.
F - Andrew Cassels
F - Chris Clark
F - Theo Fleury
F - Doug Gilmour
F - Curtis Glencross
F - Niklas Hagman
F - Tim Hunter
F - Olli Jokinen
F - David Jones
F - Chuck Kobasew
F - Bob MacMillan
F - Sandy McCarthy
F - Darren McCarty
F - Lanny McDonald
F - Brian McGrattan
F - Joey Mullen
F - Joe Nieuwendyk
F - Kent Nilsson
F - Joel Otto
F - Colin Patterson
F - Dan Quinn
F - Gary Roberts
F - Stephane Yelle
D - Tommy Albelin
D - Phil Housley
D - Cale Hulse
D - Steve Konroyd
D - Al MacInnis
D - Dana Murzyn
D - Rob Ramage
D - Robyn Regehr
D - Phil Russell
D - Todd Simpson
G - Trevor Kidd
G - Reggie Lemelin
G - Mike Vernon
I'd wonder if there were licensing issues on Iginla but he was literally on the cover of one of their games! And it's not like he hasn't been retired long enough, David Jones is on the team (?????? I mean I'm not mad but what) and he played his last game after Iginla did.

Sure, they could have included Kiprusoff, Iginla, Suter, Chouinard and other key Flames players from the past, but then there would've been no room for Trevor Kidd, Cale Hulse, or David Jones.

I feel they could have included:
Cory Stillman
Miikka Kiprusoff and
Jason Wiemer!

Probably comes down to either needing the players to be willing to negotiate their own appearance rights, or if they are members of the NHL Alumni Association (not sure if every player is automatically a member of that group).

I'm curious to see if this has been the case with other NHL teams. I don't have a copy of the game, but for example do teams like Detroit have Datsyuk and Zetterberg on their rosters?

Yeah there's gotta be more to it. As much as people hate EA, they're not so stupid that they wouldn't consider Iginla an integral part of a Flames alumni team. Pretty much every alumni team in the game has players missing that you'd expect to be there.

Who could ever forget such legends as Nik Hagman, Chuck Kobasew, and David Jones?
I see no issue here.

Shouldn't we be including Atlanta Flame alumni?

Being EA, they might have expansion packs or unlocks (or loot boxes) for some players.

Even so, surely someone better and more meaningful to the club than David Jones should have been available. Also, there are a ton of enforcers on this list.

I've been waiting to see if Tanguay and Huselius would ever be added. Kipper too obviously.

I just question the idea being implemented in the first place if it can't be done well. I think EA would probably benefit more from spending resources on improving the quality of their product instead of dedicating time to including such a half-baked feature as this.

They put in Darren McCarty? Then why didn't they include Tony Amonte?
If you have Hagman, why not Cammalleri?
Kipper, Iginla and Suter as previously mentioned.
What about Gelinas? Loob?
They got Ramage, but not McCrimmon? Murzyn but not Nattress?
Peplinski?
Macoun?
Conroy?
With some of the guys on there you would also expect to see Reinhart, Reichel, Langkow, etc.
Weird selections and cuts.

Yeah, those guys were all *pretty* good, but I mean, some guys had to be left out so they could make room for Flames great Cale Hulse. Everyone’s favourite.

It is the same way for every team where some big names are missing, some have been in since last year and some teams got big names added this year like Howe and Yzerman. Part of it is likely a rights thing and part of it is that they are likely hanging on to players for other years they know can generate hype for future games being new.

Paging I-Hate-Hulse.
It's funny -- I remember EA did a Habs alumni team in NHL 09 for their 100th year and it was very well-done. It included basically everyone of note.
