Default Calgary Comic Expo 2018

They’ve announced their first guest for 2018. It’s a good one!

I like how they didnt credit him for the new Independence Day film.

Stay classy Calgary.

Nor did they credit him with The Fly or Captain Planet, much much bigger omissions.

Oh no. I was insinuating that they did him a favour with those omissions.

You know...classy!

Every year I inwardly pray Stan Sakai will finally make an appearance. He's pretty much the only comic artist still alive I can think of who I'd be fully willing to wait in line and pay for an autograph.

I take all these announcements with a grain of salt. There have been so many cancellations in the past that it's hard to get excited when they announce big name guests. Goldblum is too active an actor right now that he won't be booked for an acting job at that time.

Typically the really big A-listers come through, don't they? Last year whatever-her-name-is from Stranger Things was a no-show but I don't recall any other really major cancellations.

They're not necessarily A list actors but they're usually the busy ones.

Norman Readus cancelled a couple years back. Tom Felton, Stan Lee, Karl Urban and Tom Cavanagh too. There's usually 4-5 cancellations leading up to the show with 1 or 2 of the bigger stars backing out. Not the organizers fault but if an actor has the option of being in a film/TV show or attending a convention they'll bail on the convention.

He already came. About 6 years ago. Not only did he not charge for autographs he was doing sketches for cheap. I think it was $20. He was a great guy!

Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo

No comic creators announced yet and the show is less than 3 months away. It got formally renamed as Calgary Expo for a reason.

I really prefer meeting the comic artists and writers at the event. Buying copies of their work directly from them feels like I'm supporting the medium. Buying autographs at $50-$120 a pop makes zero sense to me.

I guess it's the reality of catering to a generation that has reduced the word 'nerdy' to the lowest, most watered-down common denominator humanly possible. I can't even really blame the organizers, why focus on comics when big comic publishers themselves are now more interested in making movie deals? Everyone's just following the money.

It will be fine. Fan Expo is running the show now and they get some pretty good artists in. I wouldnt be surprised to see Jim Lee or Frank Miller here in April.

I was able to line up at Sakai's table for about 3-4 minutes at RCCC 2016 and got a quick Usagi Yojimbo sketch from him for a friend of mine. I donated $5 to Comic Book Legal Defense Fund for the sketch.

I never knew Jeff Goldblum worked on that show so after reading your post I decided to look up Captain Planet on IMDb, and to my surprise it turns out there were at least a dozen or so even bigger Hollywood names who did voiceover work on that show in some capacity. Elizabeth Taylor, Martin Sheen, Sting, Meg Ryan, NPH to name a few

The Original 'Social License' before the advent of the Toyota Prius.
