As per Cap friendly right now:
Salary Cap: $81.5 MM
Oilers cap hits: $86.8 MM
Oilers LTIR: $7.86
So the Oilers could go to a cap hit as high as $89.36 (Current salary cap + $ on LTIR)
Kane at $2.1 puts them at $88.9 so they are cap complaint
Here's the thing though, they don't bank that cap space.
Eventually Smith comes off LTIR which means they'll lose his $2.2 MM from LTIR, at which point they'll be ~$1.7 MM over the cap.
Cap + LTIR (without Smith) = 81.5+ 5.66 = $87.16 MM (Max cap hit going forward)
So who knows what they'll do then.
Not only did they prevent themselves from getting a better goalie, but now it looks like they are gonna have trouble even making room for their current crappy goalie.

They aren't going to be trading for a better goalie, they ain't going to be getting a better blueliner. They don't have the cap space to absorb those kind of trades.
Ken Holland literally was negotiating against no one and backed up a brinks truck to a 3 time loser to save his own job.
Kane doesn't address their weaknesses at all, and I don't think he's a two way wizard.
This is a nonsense move by a GM who wants to say he tried.

Not an expert either, but at the moment, they have about $6.6 million sitting on LTIR and were already about $1.6 million into spending above the cap.
I am probably wrong, but wouldn't that mean that they can still keep spending about $5 million over the cap?
Klefbolm and Archibald are not coming back this season, but $2.2 million comes off of the LTIR when Smith comes back. Still, should be just enough room to have Kane and not have to make any moves (I think).
Of course, things pro-rate over the season, and so on... so it is just a rough guess.

The NHL has concluded its Evander Kane investigation and found no conclusive evidence that he "made misrepresentations regarding his COVID-19 status or test results in connection with his international travel."
He's now free to sign with the #oilers.

I explained it above.
But when you're using LTIR you gotta remember 2 things:
1) Players on LTIR count towards your cap
2) You don't bank any LTIR cap space, so if you're over the cap including your LTIR $ then you don't bank anything and nothing pro-rates (if you're not using LTIR and are $2m under the cap, you can take on player making $4M for half a season, if you're over the cap but have $2M in LTIR space, you can only sign a player who makes $2M no matter when you do it)

I wonder if he still has a financial dispute with the Sharks then.
Obviously when you burn all your bridges, the only way to move is forward. He obviously can't go back to San Jose, but the way I see it, if the NHL concluded that he did nothing wrong, then the Sharks should still have to pay him and be on the hook for the cap hit.
I don't like Kane, but he should sue their asses.

Wait. Then is his contract with San Jose cancellable? No way Doug Wilson terminated him without nod of approval from the league that enough happened to make it voidable.

It appears Wilson did just that. When someone terminates improperly the usual course is to sue them for damages for the contract value (less your mitigation). So that’s the next step (either through a lawsuit or maybe he has to go thru the NHLPA process).

Kings and Sharks getting mulligans out here. Makes no sense.
Why have the rules at this point.

Garbage player human for a garbage team. Doesn't matter if it works or not, it's the wrong thing.
This is it exactly. It won't be surprising at all if the addition of Kane gives them a boost for a few games. However, it solves none of their problems.
And most importantly, it is the wrong thing to do, as an organization that represents a fan base and a city - sooner or later, they will pay a price for it. And that will be glorious!
