8 Dead in Atlanta Shooting
"A man suspected of killing eight people at three Atlanta-area spas was headed to Florida "perhaps to carry out additional shootings" when he was arrested Tuesday night, Atlanta's mayor said Wednesday, citing investigators."
https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/17/us/me...day/index.html
Though initial thoughts were that this was racially motivated due to the sharp increase in violence against Asian Americans over the past year, the suspect suggests this was a response to his own sex addiction and his attempt to eliminate temptation.
Horrific regardless. And something that could have been even worse had he not been quickly identified.

Yeah my first thought was that this was another hate crime, but it felt off. He apparently skipped other massage places closer to the first one to go to the second, which seems odd for a blanket racial attack. I hadn't seen the sex addiction, that makes sense. He looks way too Amish, but he does have the Hitlerjugend haircut though
He's lame, #### this guy.

Very sad. Especially as many of these women were likely trafficked into a life of indentured sex labour. I might even have some sympathy for this shooter if he'd gone after the traffickers and pimps instead.

Can't believe that cop said the shooter was just having a bad day. What a crock.

Considering he was arrested while driving to Florida to attack the porn industry after carrying out a mass shooting, I’m not sure “get a slurpee” is logical assumption.
Out of everything, that’s possibly the weirdest thing to take from this story and be upset about.

It was a pretty dismissive thing to say, people are rightly upset and latching on to it. Didn’t help that the Sheriff previously shared something on social media that people are also reading as anti-Asian or generally insensitive.
With the treatment of Asian Americans over the past year being much worse, there’s a lot of justified emotion surrounding this issue.

I think he shot 6 asians and 2 whites. It felt off from me as well when the reports coming in. Really sad though in a lot of ways because we're talking about possibly double victims, exploited by the sex trade and then murdered by a monster.
This didn't feel like the standard racial shooting to me anyways. But no sympathy for the killer, and no he was not having a bad day.

He blamed China for the coronavirus. If it's racist to point out the truth about a global pandemic that originated in China and then was covered up and lied about by the CCP for months then......
Also. The sheriff didn't say he had a bad day. The sheriff was summarizing what the shooter said to him. ####ing Christ the media is pathetic.

in a report released by the vancouver police department, anti-asian hate crimes increased by 717 per cent from 2019 to 2020.
To date, british columbia also surpasses any sub-national region in north america for having the most reported anti-asian hate crime incidents per asian capita.

So, is the spike in hate crimes against Asians connected to the Chinese government response to COVID? What's that about?

With Vancouver and BC having the highest concentration of Asian people in Canada this is not surprising just due to the numbers.
My assumption is that idiot racists are blanket blaming Asians for the COVID-19 pandemic and taking out their frustrations from the measures put in place on the people they deem responsible for the state of the world today.
It is ignorant and ridiculous, if you are going to hate people....hate people because they are idiots not because of their race, ethnic background, skin color or religion.
This guy is an idiot and waste of human skin.

According to the article it's per Asian capita, not just total number of incidents.

On the first comment, you can think whatever you like. Maybe save your rants about a coverup for the COVID thread? Not saying it's not valid, there's just a better place for it if that's the road you want to go down.
On the second, here's the quote:
"When I spoke to the investigators, they interviewed him this morning and they got that impression, that, yes, he understood the gravity of it. And he was pretty much fed up and kind of at the end of his rope. And yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did."
The shooter never spoke to the sheriff. And at best, he's talking about the impression investigators got, not some summary of quotes. Maybe you should have actually watched the video of the press conference like your quoted tweet suggests since you clearly did not?
If we're going to criticize the media or others, it's important to get the facts right ourselves. "This was the sheriff's position" may not be accurate, but it's much closer than "the shooter spoke to the sheriff and this is what he said."

It's also a percentage, so it shouldn't really matter how big the population is (if anything, a smaller Asian population with an increase of 717% in anti-Asian hate crimes could mean less incidents than a larger population).
Whether these victims were targeted because they were Asian, or whether the nature of the businesses targetted meant more Asians were likely to be victims, I think both speak to a deeper conversation about the difficultly and racism many Asian people face in North America.
And when you combine that with the increase over the past year due to the combination of racism and needing an "other" to blame for the pandemic, it's a topic that needs our attention. The virus may have come from China, but Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and many other people of different Asian ethnicities in North America have been villainized for it. And some still don't see how the narrative is a problem. It's horrible.

If it does become a matter that he was motivated by his sex or porn addiction, then the shooting of the Asian girls almost becomes irrelevant. He targeted massage parlors, most of whom heavily "employ" Asian females. So the deaths of these workers is a tragedy based on their profession and not their race.
And since you can't hate a business or a building in the same way that you can hate a race, does this make it difficult to prosecute him using hate crime or terrorist based laws?
I mean logically if he was trying to address his porn or sex addiction, why didn't he drive to the Pornhub offices? I don't think there are too many Source Adult Video stores left. But because of the sheer amount of massage parlors around, as they are a simple business to set up and huge money makers they because an easy target.
Have they given a breakdown of the victims, I'm assuming they're all woman?

It's pretty rare to have porn site headquarters in the USA. Most are located on random islands. Pornhub is pretty unusual, in that they have a major office in north america - montreal. Massage parlours are likely just an easy and very visible target for some maniac who isn't thinking too deeply into his horrific actions.
You could call this "terrorism" since it's politically motivated.
Edit: One victim was male:

I kind of agree with you, certainly China is the origin of COVID-19 and there is a massive coverup. That being said, these legit criticisms are often latched onto by racists, China and Chinese people are not the only example.
I don’t like the trend though, even if the crime was rascist, holding individuals responsible and accountable for crimes should be paramount. It’s like the van killer in Toronto,, posters immediately exploited it to talk about various -isms and personal causes.
