From what I'm seeing it seems like maybe it either has gone over Hokkaido, or just into the ocean nearby. Seems a lot of news sources are just catching up.

Edit: Yeah, seeing Japanese news now saying the danger is over. Still not seeing anything about exactly where the missile landed yet.

This is probably nothing more than China doing a little "look over there" around Japan and India while they prepare for something elsewhere.

No worries for Hokkaido.

You really don't want them to get good at it though, a failed test is always a failure, I say knock them out of the sky every test.

Exactly. Speaking of knocking out of the air, NK is getting ready to launch a spy satellite, that is a perfect target to knock out of the sky and send a message.

People starving at unprecedented levels in his country and Kim is launching a spy satellite? other than trying to act like a big boy is there a point to his madness?

NK has alerted Japan they will be launching their spy satellite in the next few weeks, Japan is preparing to shoot it down if it enters their airspace territory.

I wonder if it was the real deal or just a test to see Japan’s response

At this point anything North Korea does isn't newsworthy. They're the boy who cried wolf semi-annually. Nothing to see here - just the semi-annual company fire drill.

This is the playbook that his father and his grandfather laid out. It looks crazy and irrational, but its the diplomacy playbook of a leader that looks to have ultimate power but doesn't.

Kim the youngest is caught between the North Korean Intellgence Service and the Military. He has to keep both off balance and fighting each other. Because of this he has to appear to be strong to both sides.

The strategy of testing long range missiles, and short range missiles while continuing forward with their nuclear program and targeting Seoul is about the only card they've got. Usually it works to get food and other essentials from the West to calm things down. That card is wearing down.

The Truth is that North Korea has very little to trade. They have a lot of common minerals that can be bought anywhere else. They have some strategic minerals that can be bought elsewhere. They have some manufacturing plants, but again, they are goods that can be bought elsewhere including China and other Asian states.

Right now the biggest cash export from North Korea is pretty much Fentanyl.

Their former biggest trade partners aren't as interested in bailing out North Korea. Russia isn't arming them like they used to. China treats them as an annoying neighbor. China doesn't even export the cheap labor anymore.

Can I see a coupe happening? Its doubtful. The balancing act between the Army and the Intelligence Service is effective. The Army may have the guns, but the Intelligence Service can accuse and condemn senior officers and threats on a whim, and Kim is possibly less cagey and more capricious then his Father and Grandfather.

Its also interesting to note the Kim's sister Kim Yo-Jong is following the typical succession route in North Korea and has become the defacto spokes person for the country.

I mean it's no more ridiculous than a huge chunk of Americans (and Yoho) believing their voting machines were rigged by the ghost of Hugo Chavez.

Looks like a US soldier has fled to North Korea. Believed to be the first US Soldier since 1982

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-66219603

Quote:
Travis King, the American soldier who fled to North Korea, had been detained for getting into fights in South Korea before he crossed the border.

Court documents showed he also damaged a police car and had recently spent time in a detention facility in Seoul.

The 23-year-old serviceman had been recently released and was being sent back to the US when he escaped.

He joined a tour of the Joint Security Area and fled into North Korea, which has not commented so far.

It remains unclear what his intentions were for crossing the border. US authorities have said that he did so "wilfully, of his own volition" and expressed concern about his well-being.

That really sucks that someone was having a mental breakdown and did something like this. While I can't see NK hurting the guy, as there's nothing he did to them, he will be there for awhile while politics sorts itself out. Can't make it good for his mental state, to say the least.

Why do you think he had a mental breakdown? It sounds like he was going to be sent back to the U.S. to be disciplined and discharged from the military due to having a foreign criminal conviction. Maybe he just didn't want to face the consequences for his actions and thought the North Korea would treat him well for defecting.

If true that's a clear sign he was having mental health issues.
