Default 2021 Calgary Roughnecks / General lacrosse thread

So it looks like we may have a 2021/22 season starting in December. It's been a long spell as reigning champs, might as well start defending it. Nice to see they re-signed Jesse King for two more years.

Started the thread early this year as PLL starts this weekend. Top end field lacrosse all summer, with a few Roughnecks players in the mix. I know Dickson and Currier are playing. Will probably be a few more.

On the local front, junior lacrosse has lost another season except for A. Heard McBride on 960 talking about a 10 game season for Raiders etc. So it looks like the Minto will be contested this year.

Dubious highlight of the first weekend of PLL action was NLL star Austin Staats biting off Matt Gaudet's finger in a fight at the hotel. https://www.insidelacrosse.com/artic...-palasek/58064

The on field action was pretty good, Currier had a solid game for Waterdogs. Other Roughnecks current and past I saw playing were Bell & Berg. Dillon Ward from the Mammoth got lit up in goal for the Waterdogs. Rough outing.

Cannons are stacked, they took Redwoods to OT in a hell of a game.

Fan favorite and team captain Dane Dobbie isn't re-signed after being left exposed in the expansion draft. Signed a one year deal with the Seals. Dobbie was losing a step, but he was still the heart and soul of the team in my opinion.

Any Roughneck diehards able to tell me what year roughly this jersey might be from?

My guess is early 2000s

Side note, I love the embroidered rivets on the jersey numbers.

"Big Annoucement" coming tomorrow @ 10. Name change? Moving to Red Deer?

Rebranding of colours , uniforms etc. and a new corporate partner.

The Roughnecks aren't moving to Red Deer LOL. The number of games they play does not take up that much schedule time and their games will always get bumped to accommodate the Flames anyway.

I can't wait for the season to start, it's been way too long.

I think he wanted to go to San Diego, it wasn't lack of interest from the Roughnecks.

Calgary does seem to always want to stay younger. They've previously re-tolled on the fly quite successfully.

It's hard to judge players values based strictly on points, as a few players get most of the point opportunities. While a players' usage plays a big part in hockey points, it's even way more so in lacrosse.

Based on it being a Riddell jersey, and the Wendy's patch but the lack of a Rogers front patch, I'm fairly certain that's an 2004 jersey (and if it isn't '04, it's an '03, but I don't think the Wendy's patches came until 2004 season).

Kirkby's second stint would have been a Reebok jersey.

The jerseys are meh. Like boring Hitmen jerseys (or the Edmonton Rush). Stupid not to have red but if you're partnering with WestJet I guess you can't be wearing an Air Canada colour?

The turf on the other hand is a special kind of awful.

Wow....more masterful design choices from CSEC. First they design the worlds most bland and cheap looking arena. Now they drop the colour red from the Roughnecks (Calgary's colour) and decide to install the most offensive field turf in history. Honestly, can this organization be anymore incompetent? I would say the only thing they have done right is make the Stampeders primary home and road uniforms red and white again. Everything else has been a disaster.

Jersey is a bit bland.

Turf looks unique and not as bad as reading here indicates...and, it's a free market economy so anyone or company can step up and pay more sponsorship than WestJet and turn the turf back to whatever color they want.

I'm more of a petty 'I don't need to go to games or buy merch for at least five years because red and teal can coexist and I won't support an organization that thinks otherwise' free market kinda guy.

12,000+ tickets sold for a pre-season game on Friday. Kind of a lackadaisical effort by the Roughnecks, not really clicking yet. Lots of missed passes and I thought transition was the weakest part of their game, Simpson especially looked a bit out of sorts. Defense left CDB out to dry a couple of times. Jesse King and Dawson Taylor played well I thought. No Curtis Dickson.

Martel was traded yesterday for a Calgary kid who has 4 games of NLL experience. Not sure about that move, Martel seemed pretty steady on Friday.

The new PA announcer (I miss Mookie) and the new in game host need a few more games to get in the groove. I have no comment on the new turf, by 5 mins in I wasn't even noticing it. The new jerseys are a bit meh.

I get a big Raiders vibe from them so I like the new kits. They are pretty bad ass.

Maybe it is just cause I haven't been to a game in a bit but with the new turf I found it hard to follow the ball a bit. Sitting higher up in the stands the ball kind of blends in with the lighter colour of the flooring. I thought it was just me but I know a few others that commented the same.

Roughnecks-Rush on TSN tonight, pretty professional broadcast. More than happy with the announcers and camera work.

i was pleasantly surprised by the announcers. they did not come across as homers which so many do. very solid. Del Bianco was fantastic. good win, looking forward to seeing Dobbie and the Seals
