I'm not in the O/G sector myself, but have taken on a few as clients. Suncor seemed to be most bloated, bureaucratic, and inefficiently run out of all of the ones I've worked with. Every decision took them forever, and there way too many people involved in the process. From an outsiders perspective, if there ever was a company that seemed to need a trim, it was Suncor.

This is a very accurate assessment.

I remember doing a project for them years ago. We had to buy a piece of software for under $100. It took weeks because there was no procedure in that department for such a small transaction, nor a procedure for reimbursement. And hours were spent trying to figure out how to get it, so lost productivity. Just an anecdote, but definitely inefficient.

The last project we did for them was designing a simple one page infographic, that they probably stuck on some wall and nobody ever read. I just checked the file and it looks like it took 26 different versions, and 2 months of back and forth, to complete that single page. I remember it to be one of the most inefficient projects we've ever worked on.

I worked for a company that used to do remediation and land reclamation for all the major oil companies, and Suncor was by far the most difficult to work with. We'd have our engineers develop a work program, but then they would have their engineers revise it and micromanage everything. The end result was always something more expensive and time consuming than our original plan. It was almost impossible to recoup the costs. We were always wondering why they even bothered hiring consultants when they didn't want to ever do things the way the consultants wanted.
I remember one time in particular, we proposed doing a risk assessment to get the site signed off. Total cost was quoted at around $1 million, and the process would have taken about 2 years. They insisted on dig and dump with soil volume estimates with really unreasonable precision. They wouldn't even let us go in to do test holes to do the estimate. We ended up doing it the way they wanted and the cost exceeded $1 million dollars. At the end of it, there were still parameters exceeding standards in groundwater that could not be remediated in a cost effective way, and we had to do a risk assessment anyway. Everyone lost money on it. They ended up having to pay way more, and the company I worked for had to eat a bunch of costs as well just to keep them happy. We were all relieved once the standing offer was over and we didn't have to work for them any more.

Convenient timing this massive layoff is announced only days after the provincial election? Seems like a fairly nice hold until the powers at be were done benefiting.
Had the NDP won we'd already being hearing the narrative about how they are bad for jobs etc. UCP government hangs onto power and crickets.

I blame the Nutley/Trudope/Singh Alliance, as well as the Laurentian Elites that are out to get Alberta. This is a lib/socialist conspiracy of the highest order.

In just 8 short years they managed to bring their master plan to fruition and kill 1500 oil jobs! How do they work so fast!

Awesome to see all the non winners in the Alberta election thread suddenly become so passionate about the oil and gas sector.

Well it is the oil and gas layoff thread and people in the oilfield just got laid off. Where would you like them to discuss it?

Typical sour cream UCP logic: people who didn't vote for the Wildrose United Party don't care, don't work in and are enemies of oil and gas.

It must be incomprehensible to him that a bunch of us that work in oil & gas voted NDP.

This sounds like someone who doesn’t work in the downtown Calgary O+G sector or understand the political demographics of those employees.

You would know a thing or two about non-winning.
There should be a rule that if you do not post in the Fire and Ice side you should not be able to post in the off topic.

Any idea on the numbers at TC?
Sounds like it’s cutting some fat as they are still actively filling some positions.

If you talk to anyone at TC or Suncor they all agree they have a bunch of chub, and probably everyone on this board knows at least 6 at each company due to how many people they have.
Suncor also a new CEO after the last had to resign after the brutal safety record. New guy always has to cut some fat after coming in.
