Crazy as it sounds the Bengals should have considered a surprise onside after that touchdown. Was fairly obvious the Ravens would get into FG range without an issue.

Quarterback play is down across the board this season. Not sure if it's just first month rust seeing starters don't play in the preseason anymore or if defenses have started to finally catch up to the rules added over the years to increase offense.

just goes to show how different NFL and college football really are. Both Matt Rhule and Joe Brady came highly touted and completely bombed in their first NFL gig. Brady took the smart backwards step to take the Bills QB coach job, at least.

Finding the next great head coach is just as difficult as finding the next great QB.

In watching parts of that game yesterday it looked like the team pretty much gave up after the pick 6 at the end of the first half.

The Panthers have almost become that team you forget exists in the NFL with how irrelevant they have become. They have a reasonably decent defence so if they could figure out the QB position they could be competitive.

The difference between the two is not about football acumen or gameplanning or x and os, it about being the appropriate psychologist.

In college at a high level as a HC you help recruit guys, out of high school, and thus have an early bind with them and know what makes them tick and what motivates them and you inherintley have their loyalty. You have full control over personal and are able to mold players into a team and you feel like their leader.

The pro player doesn't have the same loyalty or connection to you as a coach or you the organization and has vastly different things that make them tick to get the most out of them, and you as a coach are more their handler than leader. Sure you can hire staff to help build a connection but then you're not really in charge.

College your the strict teacher that no one wants to let down. NFL your a baby sitter trying to keep, at worst, everyone happy to hopefully get the most out of...and if you as a coach whose used to be the one in control and now you don't have that, it's hard to deal with since that's how you've been wired.

They get hired by NFL owners because they are strong and effective leaders and positive people, but those personality traits don't jive with the pro player or pro locker room necessarily. It's why assistants who have been around the pro game and locker room and sidelines and see all the situations that come up with pro players and issues and what makes them tick etc and thus how to manage them, are more suited to HC roles because really, they know what they are getting into and have to deal with at a individual person and personality level with players.

Not going to shed too many tears for Rhule, he's owed $40+M to not coach the Panthers anymore.

Funny thing is that the league turns its back fast on head coaches that fail but when it comes to highly drafted QB’s the Wentz, Mayfield, etc just keep getting chances to prove their critics right. Bringing in Mayfield was the final nail in Rhule’s coffin.

Rhule is also why we will always get retreads. Even Jeff Fisher as Carolina's coach the last three years wouldn't have been that bad. Sure, they wouldn't have been anywhere close to good enough to win anything, but they wouldn't be a laughing stock. Hard to believe this stat, but the Panthers were 1-27 in Rhule's time when the opponent scored more than 17 points. Imagine having legit no chance if the opponent scores on as little as three drives. He'll do well as Nebraska's coach I'm sure.

I would rather swing for the fences on a hot college coach than settle for perennial 7 or 8 win seasons under Fisher. It took the NFL long enough but they finally figured out that bottoming out for draft picks > perennial mediocrity with no chance of success.

Have they? The Colts or Titans are going to win the AFC South and continue to be stuck in purgatory because they are not bad enough (or in this case play in perhaps the worst division in NFL history) to get a top QB prospect. The Vikings will probably win their division and be stuck with Cousins for several more years. The Saints think Dalton/Jameis can be enough. Falcons have Mariota instead of bottoming out. Steelers with Trubisky, etc...It's still a win now league, and it seems most coaches would rather hope they can squeeze into the playoffs, which is even more possible now with the #7 seed, then tank. What we've seen more recently is teams willing to trade big to draft a QB and taking the "#### Them Picks" approach. Because after all, if you're going to strike out and get fired, do you really care if you leave the next management group in a draft pick deficit?

Yet Fisher isn’t getting any more chances. What McVay did in his first season with Fisher’s team was the final nail in his coffin when owners finally paid attention to what Fisher is all about. He’s irrelevant.
