I'm ashamed we allow this to exist in Canada.
Well, the people were arrested for the beatings. So what other behaviours are you advocating we make unlawful?

Cults of indoctrination would be a good start.

I imagine it’s pretty difficult to come up with a legal definition of indoctrination.

Outlaw religion? In the words of George Carlin, "we don't have time for rational solutions".

Cliff, sounds like you are OK with what goes on there. If not, what would you propose to stop the abuse?

The Calgary Flames are a cult of indoctrination. They convince a group of people to part with their money in a regular assembly and subject them to the abuse of the continuous failure and dream crushing while at the same time encouraging hatred of outsiders based on geographic location.

Can you come up with a definition of cult that excludes the flames and includes this denomination of church. Everything is brainwashing. Your phone is continually shaping your behaviour right now. How do you write a law that excludes what your phone does but includes this religious group.

As to what we can or should do.

Investigate and Enforce the law.

The things that you want to be illegal are already illegal. Child Abuse, kidnapping, forceable confinement, with holding necessary medical treatment etc. All of these actions are illegal.

If you want to stop evangelizing groups the how different are you then any other state agency that has tried to control belief throughout history. It never ends well and is at the root of numerous atrocities throughout history.

I’m not okay with it people physically abusing children and I’m glad they’re being charged. As for the indoctrination, part of living in a liberal society with freedom of religion is some people are going to raise children to believe crazy ####. But how do you prevent that without the state stepping in to pass judgement on every credo and faith?

I suppose Canada could come down hard on the side of secularism like France does. But they’ve also banned the hijab. Is that the route we want Canada to go?

Like it or not, Canada has been a haven for religious sects and those who feel persecuted for their faith for a couple hundred years. It’s in the DNA of our society and our laws. Unless people are being coerced or abused the state can’t step in.

How does the government determine tax-exempt status for some but not all religious institutions?

I think the question is not with the criminality of the individuals who perpetrate these terrible crimes. I doubt anyone would argue that they should be charged and convicted.

The question becomes whether the institution itself is liable for obstructing justice, covering up these crimes, enabling the perpetrators, etc. Much more difficult to prove, and yet if true, would likely prevent future crimes more so than charging an individual or two. If there is any truth in the Spotlight film, those institutions have a great deal of power and influence, which skews the argument that, well "charge the guy like any other criminal". They simply are not like any other criminal.

I agree that prosecutors should investigate if the organization obstructed justice, and it should be charged if it did.

However, I doubt the Church of God Restoration has any institutional influence. It has a few thousand members, mostly in the Midwest US and Canadian Prairies, and I doubt any them are politicians, judges, or deep-pocketed political donors. It’s not the Catholic Church in 1960s Boston.

I think the fact that so many issues have been coming to the surface over the years (and surely many more hidden away do to the shame and fear these acts have caused) gives some credence to the notion that, while these institutions may not have influence, they may have been given too much deference.

Aliens and talking lizard people, just as plausible as all the other magic nonsense these gullible fools believe.

Sounds about right, let's make sure they don't pay tax!
