Default Minecraft 2023

So all the other Minecraft threads are OLD and I couldn't think of a more creative name, so here's the Minecraft 2023 thread. I'm open to a name change.

I'm looking for some guidance on Minecraft servers.

1. I have two boys who currently mess around in Minecraft on both iPad and Switch. Which I believe is Bedrock Edition?
2. I also enjoy Minecraft, but haven't played in awhile and would do so from my Windows PC, which I belive means Java Edition?
3. I've done some research on possibly "renting" a Minecraft server from a provider, but the amount of different flavours and options is a bit overwhelming. Paper? Spigot? Fabric? Bueller... Bueller?
4. Ideally my kids would connect from iPad or Switch, and eventually maybe via a laptop. So flexibility is needed.
5. I don't want to spend a huge bucket of money, but also want the server to perform well and not be a frustration to manage.
6. Is putting it on a spare PC in my basement my best option? Does this change the simple to manage approach to something that would be more complicated?

So tell me.. Where do I go? How do I keep it simple, cheap, and have the ability to access it from multiple devices? And possibly run some fun mods for the kids?

I just started playing again on bedrock. I find the game super relaxing. Have you considered paying for a realm or is that what you are looking to avoid?

Bedrock is cross-platform. We played ipad/switch/PC on it.

I had read some reviews that indicated Realms can be laggy and not great. Haven't looked into the cost.

I think the most fun I ever had playing video games with my friends it was when a group of eight of us had a server on Realms it was so damn fun and we all use different consoles and systems and I didn't notice any real issues. I think it's something like 10 bucks a month for around for 10 people and maybe half that for two people.

I've been using Realms for a few years now and it's totally fine. The only lag I notice is during high speed movement (ie. minecarts) or heavy block removal (ie. breaking sand in huge amounts at once) but otherwise it works really well. It's easy to setup and use so I recommend it.

I used Minehut for a server. It is free and I got two worlds. I used it so my kids could play online with friends without figuring out how all the kids could allow each other to connect to their computers. It worked well except for kids being kids and messing with each other's buildings etc.

I haven't played in about 3 years. I have a massive world I've been building in creative mode. I've been working on it for several years and I'm quite proud of it. It's nothing like you see that's already out there but it is quite unique. One thing it has is a massive pyramid which I created before the fill function was a thing.... I wish that was around much sooner!

My 5 year old wants to start playing Minecraft. Is bedrock on a tablet the edition I should consider to start with? (That's how he'd want to play)

I prefer he play alone for now to figure things out, but later on be able to scale up as he wants to play with friends and/or perhaps his sister can learn earlier.

I built my own Minecraft on my server. It's based on a Docker container so you could still do it on your PC. It's called MineOS. I gave my son admin privs on it and he just runs it on his own.

It was pretty configurable and you can add your own mods as desired. Looking into some other stuff I came across https://craftycontrol.com/. That might give ya some options as well
