It was mentioned earlier in this thread that the property for the new arena is significantly larger than both Edmonton and Detroit's arena land. I got curious and decided to do some visualizations...
First, I used the current development permit application to identify the layout of the property. The green line is the edge of the property and the yellow line is the footprint of the building at ground level.
A couple of things to note:
The north east corner of the property is designated for future development -- likely a hotel (JW Marriott or similar) and possibly mixed-use residential and/or offices. During construction, it will be used as a staging area for the project.
The south east corner is where the practice/community rink will be located. The ice surface will likely be at the same level as the main arena, meaning it should be completely underground. It will be interesting to see what is done at ground level there.
The squared-off part on the east side of the building is where the parkade will be. It looks like there will be both above and below ground parking in the parkade.
Here is Little Caesars on the land. Note that the practice rink and parking garage are not part of the arena footprint in Detroit. The parking garage is separated from the arena by a public plaza that's about 50m wide, and the practice rink and loading docks are underground, below the plaza.
When you factor in the parking garage and plaza, the overall property in Detroit is bigger than Calgary.
Here's Rogers Place. This has the parkade, community rink, and casino all attached to the arena, which is similar to how the new arena will be set up.
