I buy used games almost exclusively. Occasionally EB games has those trade in 2-3 games of over $8 in value for a new one, which you can take advantage of. And lately, games valued that much are hard to find. You can check trade-in value of games here. http://www.tivs.ca. Interestingly enough, Blockbuster often gives you the best value for trade-ins. There was also that thread in Buy/Sell here at CP where people were trading games.

In terms of straight buying a used game without trade-ins, you can find some pretty good gems at Cash Converters. A lot of those guys have no idea what a game may cost and may undercut it by a lot. Conversely, sometimes they sell shovelware for way too much. The other place I'll check is beyond.ca's marketplace. Sometimes you find good deals there as well.

If you buy used, just make sure you see the disc before you buy it. Pretty simple, and at Gamestop they usually show me without asking anyway. 9 times out 10 I will get the same thing as a brand new game with nothing missing.

the only exception is some of the new games or relatively new games have online codes which are likely used (for ps3 anyways not sure about 360). for example i had smackdown vs raw 2011 and apparently the code is a one-time use to get online, otherwise it is $10 to get online

Same thing with 360. EA Sports titles are a good example of this.

Learned this the hard way when I bought BFBC2 used, then had to buy the VIP card to get the unlocked maps.

I like the xbox because the ps3 controllers are made for little baby hands.

Another question. I see now that you can buy and download full games from Xbox Live right on the console. I see two advantages. It's easy and reasonably fast, also it doesn't require a disc to play. But what if my hard drive bites the dust? A disc seems like a good backup, but does Microsoft allow you to recover these files?

Yes, once you buy something off of Xbox Live whenever you go back to the item screen it will say "Download Again" instead of "Buy Now".
