Graphics card running hot
According to GPU-z my graphics card is running at 71 C idle... goes to about 103 and crashes under load.
I've tried remounting the heatsink (with isopropyl alcohol and Arctic Silver 5) three times and I can't get it lower. Not sure what's going on. The weird thing is that it isn't hotter. I screwed up the remount once and it didn't work at all, so I know the heatsink is at least somewhat working. But it's not completely working either. Any ideas?
Also, in case I have to buy a new one... anyone know anything about the EVGA GTX 460 SSC+ w/ backplate? Huge overclock at 850 MHz and has a lower MSRP than some of EVGA's slower cards.

IIRC, you have a 9800GTX?
The G80/G92 series are all dying these days. Same thing happened to my 8800GT and 8800GTX. Started idling really hot. My FPS started to drop to 50% of expected performance.
Don't buy factory overclocked cards. They are not a great value and the factory overclock is only tested for a short time. There is no guarantee it will hold out over 2-3 years (my 8800GT was an XXX edition).

Yep, that's the one. Didn't realise this is a symptom of a dieing card. Guess I can buy a replacement guilt-free. Is your recommendation the EVGA EE version?

If the heat sink is mounted properly and the fan still has decent rpm's it must be another issue. Aside from what you've done I'm not sure what else you can do.
The 460 is for sure a nice card. I have 2 GTX260 SSC from EVGA and they are great. I had to RMA one and EVGA's tech support and service was fairly decent to deal with.

The 460 is not the value it once was. It used to be that the $200 card in SLI would beat the $400 5870. Now the 6870s are heading down to the $200 range close to SLI'd 460s.
I know Nvidia is your thing because of 3D Surround. Maybe try one of the GTX 470s that are on sale.

$236 after rebate.

Depends on if you want the AR or TR version and the price you can get them for. AR is lifetime warranty. TR is 2 two year warranty.

As long performance is fine, I don't see why you can't keep using the hot card unless it is affecting your system badly or causing the fans to be unbearable. For me, my Nvidia cards started to run hot and run badly and were all RMA'd thanks to XFX double lifetime warranty.
Who is the manufacturer of your card? Do you still have warranty?

Ya the EE on Memory Express is AR for an extra $10, not sure how much difference the external exhaust is really going to make.

I'm a moron and didn't register the card.
Card is perfectly good for outputting video, but crashes in games.

i have an 8800GTX i was having heat issues as well, so i leave the side of my case open now, and sometimes run a fan pointed at it if i get into intense 3d. no more issues.
and 71c at idle is fine on mine.

Well it's not the idle temp that's the issue, so much as the corresponding load temp. I'll try opening the case and seeing if it makes a difference though.
Edit: 65 with the side off... maybe I can save this thing with better case flow (and I can think of a few things I can do to fix that).

Okay, so Furmark runs with the case side off, but stutters every 2 seconds. What does that mean?
Edit: apparently means that GPU-z is running. Furmark seems to max out at 95 now... this is good. Time to try a game.
Update: well that worked... I'll have to check out my case temps more closely.

Yeah the 8800's are power mongers. Looks like your sold on nvidia but ATI is making more efficient cards these days and may help you overall in terms of not overworking your power supply etc. Have you checked your CPU temps? Is it just the 3d that crashes or is it your whole comp?

Yep... same here, have another 8800GT thats running hot and dying too. Sadly my current power supply can only handle a 5770, but thats still a huge upgrade compared to what I currently have.
I seem to remember the whole 8800 series being the centre of some kind of GPU package problem for Nvidia awhile back. Maybe yours is another symptom of that?

If it does die, take a look at this thread:

As Hack&Lube alluded to, I have nVidia geForce 3D Vision... so ATI is simply not an option.
It's the definitely the video card crashing, but it's hard to recover the system when your video output is locked. Or when you don't have video output at all.
CPU ~idle temps are 42/42/37/36 with the case open.

Interesting, I just received the same warning. Let's remove the links.
Sorry about that. It's a link I have bookmarked at home and I haven't had that before.

I'm pretty sure it's a false alarm. I surf Hardforum even more than Calgarypuck.
I wouldn't bake your card (reflow it) unless it actually dies completely.
