Flames swap Mangiapane for Rychel

Quote:
CALGARY - The Calgary Flames announced today that they have recalled forward Kerby Rychel from the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League. The Flames have reassigned goaltender Jon Gillies and forward Andrew Mangiapane to Stockton. Calgary has also removed Mikael Backlund from the IR.

Rychel, born in Torrance, California was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round (19th overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft. The 24-year-old currently leads the Stockton Heat in scoring with 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points in 25 games. Rychel has 41 games of NHL experience with three goals and 11 assists for 14 points split between Columbus and Montreal. The Flames acquired Rychel on August 20, 2018 in a trade with Montreal that sent Hunter Shinkaruk to the Canadiens.

Sucks Mangiapane wasn’t able to show more in his stint. He needs a confidence pick up

I’d like to see Rychel be strong on the wall and make good plays on rims to help team exit clean and in rhythm. Play his game and just be strong on pucks.

Hopefully Backs gives the team a boost and they just go to work.

I thought Mangi really struggled last game. Not to surprised by this move.

Out of thanks, but that got a good laugh out of me

I fully support swapping Mangiapane with Rychel. Eatbread showed some flash, but needs to take a couple more steps if he wants to become an NHL regular. (Which I doubt happens.to be honest. I don't think he's quite skilled and smart enough to make it with his size. Obviously I hope I'm wrong.)

So Rychel is the current return for Granlund (via Shinkaruk). Curious to see how he looks.

I weirdly wanted to see a bit more of the Tkachuk, Lindholm, Neal line.

They looked like they had potential to do some good things.

Happy Backs is back!

It seems to me that whenever Mangiapane comes up his best game is his first and he gradually loses effectiveness.

Disappointed for Mangiapane. I really like him and feel he’s ready, but he just hasn’t shown enough. Had a good first few games, but the last 3-4 he’s really fell off. Good for Rychel to get rewarded.

Yeah its disappointing. He was so bad yesterday you just knew he was going to get sent down.

Neat to see that the flames have a lot of depth options that they can work with to find a good fit.

Dube
Lomberg
Mangiapane
Quine
Rychel
Lazar

I think Rychel is a most intriguing option because:
1) plays with edge
2) good size and good hands allows him to get garbage goals
3) good shot - hard, quick release

Could be a good fit on either of line 3 or line 4.

Rychel-Janko-neal
Quine-Ryan-hathaway

Lazar might be the best fit of all...but waivers. So if you call Lazar up, you have to comfortable leaving him up or losing him on waivers

Rychel is also tied to the 2009 23rd overall pick Tom Erixon as well.

Erixon was initially sent to New York Rangers in exchange for forward Roman Horak and two second-round picks. (Markus Granlund & Tyler Wotherspoon)

Mangiapane seemd to get pushed off the puck quite a bit. I think if he's going to make it in the NHL it's going to be in the top 6. I still think he can get there though, he's just not there yet.
What Calgary really needs is big bodies who will go out and wear down defenders and shut down offences.
