Oilers or not, Tippett is a good hire. He has the ability to dumb down the game enough to get his teams competitive when they're terrible depth wise. Aka he knows how to coach a bunch of plugs.

To what NHL Championship?
I agree, he's a good coach. I also thought Hitch, McLelland and Krueger were too and likely still would be. There's just not a team in front of him that's going to win anything just like there wasn't in Arizona. And Edmonton being Edmonton, they'll be running him out of town in 3 years not looking to re-sign him regardless of how much his bunch of losers over-achieve.

I know he's had bad teams, but Tippett only made the POs 3 out of 7 years with the Yotes (and his first three years to boot) and made it past round one once. The year he did that he had Smith playing .930 goal. He also had a better overall lineup than Edmonton can boast - Doan, Vrbata, Whitney, Hanzal, Boedker, Langkow, Korpikoski, Vermette, OEL, Yandle, Morris, Aucoin, Stone.
I think Tippett is a good coach, and though he is known for being a very defensive coach in Phoenix, his team played much more offensively in Dallas.
I do not, however, feel this is going to end well. Tippett had a lot to do with pushing out Maloney in a power-struggle with the owner, IIRC. After a month, he will realize that the Oilers don't have a real NHL team, and will start complaining about the lack of talent he has to work with, and cause a ruckus in the organization. Maybe that will actually push them to make real changes and improve.
Either that, or the Oilers will still suck, because, you know, they are the Oilers. I put my money on the sucky Oilers every time.

My understanding is that Tipped signed for just under $3 million a year. Believe it's between $2.75 M and $3 million a year. Pretty good bargain for the Oilers given where coaches' salaries have gone for veteran guys the last few little while.
I think both Holland and Tippett were front runners for positions in Seattle, Tippett was actually consulting for the Seattle franchise. Their wives must hate them for being premature here.
