Staal has 1 year left at $5.75 mil cap hit but only owed $3.2 mil for the season after his $1 mil signing bonus was paid out.

Rangers clearing space for their annual big fish acquisition in Free Agency. Here goes Pietrangelo to NYC.

Trouba, Fox and DeAngelo? Thats their 3 RHD. They only have Lindgren and Brendan Smith on the left side, unless they think Rykov can handle full time duties.

costs NYR a 2nd to dump the contract. Also of note is that Staal had a full NMC and had to waive it to go to Detroit.

This gives the Rangers $20m in cap space, with 9 bodies to sign, including Strome and DeAngelo.

Only 3.2m owing though, and we'll see if there is any cap retention too. Teams don't usually put that stuff in their press releases.

With future considerations do they “have” to give something back or can a trade just be one way with nothing ever going back the other way?

Yeah, if they're paying a 2nd rounder to clear cap they obviously have something in the hopper.
I'm glad the oil didn't win Lafreniere, but this team certainly didn't need or deserve to win him either.

And I’m pretty sure they’ll be buying out Lundqvist still, they should have a lot of cap room. They are going to be a good team here real soon.

Yzerman picks up a second round pick just for being in a good cap situation. And gets a serviceable defenseman for a year without wading into the UFA pool.
