Prior to the period quoted, there were traded goalies that won the cup. And guess what, there will be in the future as well.

It is human nature to see patterns - even when patterns don't exist. One of the consequences of this human trait is that we are quick to draw conclusions from data that are unwarranted.
I don't think anyone's said it's impossible. My conclusion would be that it's a move in the wrong direction and not a great way to spend key assets or precious cap space.

The career path of the goalie probably isn't the thing that matters. More likely it's an indicator of teams who are patient, scout/draft/develop well, and don't waste many assets chasing short-term gains until they are actually built to contend.

Size wise you do have a little guy like Point, but he doesn't have the heart and intestinal fortitude that Point has.

Yeah, I don't know if Johnny and Point are too far off from a pure skill perspective, but Point really separates himself by driving the net, going to dirty areas, and fighting through checks. He has a bit of a chip on his shoulder that really elevates his play.
I think Johnny is competitive enough, but he just doesn't seem to have the drive (or frame) to push into the dirty areas regularly to lift himself beyond what he currently is.

This is true.

But Johnny might end up being much more durable, if he's not already.
I wouldn't be surprised if Point regresses at a much earlier age than Johnny does.
Although this isn't a hard and fast rule, Martin St. Louis managed to win the Art Ross at 37.

Exactly. It was sickening to hear Brendan Batchelor calling the SCF on SN radio say "the Lightning win their 2nd Stanley Cup."

you want a good, durable small guy who can't elevate his game, shies away from the dirty work, and disappears in the playoffs? or a balls to the wall little guy who is a leader on a cup champion?

perhaps being more durable doesn't seem to be much of a selling point, especially if you're comparing him to Point.

i would also say it is harder to play C versus W.

i may be biased, but IMHO point drives play when he is out on the ice. Johnny not as much.

johnny may miss less games due to injury, but who is more determined in the dirty areas?
