Default Player Positions

I know this hasn't been brought up yet but wanted to start a thread so GMs could get a head start if they have extra time on their hands.

I want to help stress the importance of this to GMs, new and old, as it's a very underrated part of the game. The value of your player increases significantly, IMO, if they can play multiple positions. So taking the time to put in some Google work might pay off later.

Here's how I do it. If anyone else has tips, please feel free to share.

Using Schenn as an example. He's a C on most pages but I know that he's played LW and RW before. So, I'll see if I can find a reputable website to link as proof.

I'll Google:
"Brayden Schenn LW"
"Brayden Schenn RW"
"Brayden Schenn LW/RW"
"Brayden Schenn C/LW"
"Brayden Schenn C/RW"
"Brayden Schenn Cap"

I forget the exact list of accepted websites but they will be HockeyDB, TSN, ESPN, NHL, etc etc. Nothing fantasy or pre NHL (no Dailyfaceoff or Eliteprospects, etc). The link has to be a profile link as well - not an article where the 3rd paragraph shows at one point the player played a certain position. The official list of acceptable sources will be posted by the commish team later this summer.

For example: I found a TSN link that lists him as C/RW:: https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player-bio/brayden-schenn

And this capfriendly link which places him as a C/LW:
https://www.capfriendly.com/players/brayden-schenn

So now he can play all 3 forward positions instead of C only. It takes a good thirty minutes of work but man, having a guy be able to play multiple positions makes them so much easier to trade and MUCH more valuable to your own team if/when injuries happen.

I'm guessing this takes place post-UFA batches. But, if you have the time right now, it would be a great idea to do the research and save those links for when the time comes.

Acceptable sites:
- NHL.com
- TSN
- The Hockey News
- Sportsnet
- ESPN
- hockeydb
- Capfriendly
- Rotoworld

Not acceptable
- Articles that make mention of a player's position. We need profiles
- Hockeysfuture
- Eliteprospects
- Junior hockey links to justify an NHL position

Also positions from last years roster file is acceptable.

One question I did have.... if someone is listed as C/W with an approved acceptable source that means C/LW/RW correct?

I’m not sure what this means. If a player was LW/C last season, he is eligible at those same positions this season? Or do we still have to provide current links?

If you go to your team page there is a link titled "Notes" I would suggest that you paste your position links for you players.

Every season you just have to click that and you have an archive of you links saved there.

I would also suggest make Capfriendly your first place to look for secondary positions. I tend to find that they are the most consistent

Not necessarily, I have one player who had C/LW/RW last season

SIM won't have those preloaded this year.

I will need to re-send the backup for his positions and the backup this year only show C & LW.

Make sure you, provide the proper backup for all your forwards.

Great suggestion. I had no idea a notes page even existed. Cool.

How come EliteProspects doesn't work for positions

They are a pretty strong resource.

Traditionally they had a lot of positions based on where the player played as a junior. If that's changed we can re-visit.

Somewhat off topic-

Am I the only one having to do some “verify you’re not a robot” test most of the time using hockeydb?

I almost wish it was just 1 resource like capfriendly. I think it would promote trading more.

It was doing that for me, I ended up getting IP banded twice, you will as well

I contacted them, you need to turn off your ad blocker, it’s the only way it pays for the site and honestly it’s the least you can do to support the sites you enjoy

It goes away once you have your ad blocker off

I'm going to bump this now and then again mid summer as I believe it's a crazy under-utilized way to add significant value to players on your team. I'm really a strong believer in this.
If anyone needs help, I will happily take on a team or two as well and do player searches for you.

Sorry. Forgot to mention that the deadline for this isn't until later this summer but it's a great idea to get a head start and compile a list
