Not knowing anything about Toews, this doesn't really instill hope that he is a progressive...
Quote:
Press Progress discovered that Mr. Toews (his name is pronounced Taves, by the way) had spent several years on the board of the Peace River Bible Institute, an interdenominational evangelical Bible college in the town of Sexsmith that requires students to forswear not only sex outside of marriage, but witchcraft, sorcery, spell casting, Ouija boards, yoga, same-sex massages, and rituals associated with demonic activity.
The school’s handbook explicitly bans any sexual activity outside a “loving marriage relationship between one man and one woman,” Press Progress reported.
At the time, Mr. Toews didn’t offer any comments about his religious beliefs and how they might influence his decisions in government, and it seems unlikely he will now either.

Yoga? Banned from doing yoga? Sorry, but we need politicians who don't believe in witchcraft and banning stretching, let alone the intrusive sexual stuff they ban. Sure hope this "school" doesn't receive tax dollars. Can't believe it's 2022 and people with political power are so afraid of a board game they banned it.
So that strikes him from the list...next?

I don't know if you have seen.. Many in Charge have been pushing there personal beliefs on there constituents even though polling has shown most don't agree with those positions. So yes we should care about that stuff...
If we had evidence of them putting there personal beliefs aside and acting as good fiscal stewards, I would not care of there personal beliefs.

What is leading you to believe that he is capable? I think that’s the counter point you want to be making.

I'm questioning his ability to make rational decisions. I think that's fairly relevant for someone how wants to be a premier. You know, decisions based on facts, science and reality.
If he came out and said that he fought with the board to have those items removed, and it didn't work out and that is why he isn't on the board anymore, I might respect that. As is it's a pretty big question mark on his credibility.

Toews is a Mennonite name so that all makes sense. Keep the religion out of politics and his past means nothing.

Travis can start by banning the words "Gold Bless" in all Leg political matters and ban visits on political time to things like Prayer Breakfasts.
Absolutely no religious dogma should ever intersect with a taxpayer dime. At least in my opinion.

Why would he need to be a steady hand when he'll just let Jesus take the wheel?

I know its a low bar, but he seems like the most reasonable and responsible of this clown show. Him and Leela Aheer.
He also seems boring which I think we could really use right now.

Sigh. Why can't we just have a credible socially progressive, fiscally conservative candidate. One that is centrist, one that keeps religion, personal agendas and bat#### insane right-wing lunacy out of their political decision making, one that relies on science and data to make inform policy, and one that is in actually in touch with this province's constituents.
Why is this so hard for Alberta. WHY.

Maybe because 1/3 of the constituents are socially conservative?

Seems like a pretty vague answer for someone who is trying to justify calling other people’s views hilarious.
What makes you think he’s the most reasonable and responsible? I’m asking because in all seriousness he seemed to be in line with the rest of the party the past few years and I don’t recall him ever speaking out against their shenanigans. Not sure why whether or not someone is boring should be a factor in determining one’s ability to lead.

The fact that Toews is the first establishment candidate to declare, and, according to Braid, is backed by Kenney's campaign team, lends support to the idea that the balance of power within the UCP rests firmly with rural voters. They'll need a moderate, urban candidate just to engage the former PC wing, causing voters who otherwise might have sat out to cast a vote. Then they'll need to hope that Toews outlasts that candidate on the ballot, so that the runoff votes go to from that candidate to Toews (as opposed to Toews getting knocked out first, where his second place votes are less certain to go to an establishment candidate over Jean).

Alberta? How about for the world
Not like other countries and provinces are running elite politicians
Blame the voters , not those running for office . Their goal is to get elected and stay elected

for the longest time I had thought that this was how the ideal Canadian government would work. as time goes on I've come to believe that these two things are oil and water and can't realistically exist together on a single platform.
socially progressive means taking care of people where needed, which means money must be spent. it's the type of funding that fiscal conservatives tend to fundamentally disagree with.
