Default Canada plans to buy NEW Fighter Jets - F-35 reported chosen

U.S. defence giant Lockheed-Martin is eager to sign a sole-source contract with Ottawa to sell as many as 65 of the advanced stealth fighters, but a deal on long-term service would be extra -- and could cost billions more.

I think it's about time we retire our aging CF-18's and update our military tools.

In related news, I'm still pissed about the Avro Arrow.

It's too bad that we won't be picking up any of the STOVL versions.

The JSF is probably the right replacement for the CF-18 fleet. Plus with its STOL and VTOL performance it could be deployed to many more remote locations around our country should the need arise.

If the navy is getting new ships, the RCAF is due these new fighters. I'm all for a small well equiped armed forces. If they do sign off on the JSF then they will be in pretty good shape:

-JSF
-C-17 Globemasters
-New Hercules J models (first one just arrived a few days ago)

Are our CF-18s really SO outdated for the military that we need to order upwards of 65 JSFs? Aren't there aspects of the military that could use that money a lot more?

Well the Navy is getting a 30 year shipbuilding order, and with this purchase I would humbly claim that the two most important forces arms for projecting our power and asserting our borders are in place.

I believe we currently have 120+ CF-18's in commission right now, and all of them are getting more difficult to maintain and modernize.

I think the financial issue with these new jets are how much would it cost to maintain and how durable they are.

I like this quote from the thread I linked to above:

Quote:
$9 Billion dollars to buy 65 aircraft that will protect Canada for the next 20 or 30 years compared to the $1 billion Canada is spending on security for the heads of states attending the G8/G20 summits in Huntsville and Toronto for three days in June.

Sounds like a bargain to me.

Apparently the timeframe for the retirement of the current CF-18 Hornet fleet is around 2017.

Other aircraft still rumoured to be in the race are the Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing Super Hornets, or even one of the SAAB fighter aircraft.

I guess it just depends how serious you think it's going to get - and with who - with an ice-free Arctic.

If you don't think it's that serious and that Russia isn't going to be involved, then maybe this doesn't have to be the plane you need to supplement the typical USA-supplemented missions it's otherwise going to be called upon to help service.

As indicated in the Herald on Monday, this and some recycled law and order bill should be hitting the table some time in the next few months in an effort to try to "force" the opposition to vote against them for causation for a new election.

138 mil seems alot lower than what I remember the quoted price for the US is - how is that possible?

If the Aussie's are buying 100 for their country, I think it makes sense for a landmass as large as ours to have at least that amount. Yet we are only gunning for around 65.

When you mentioned Boeing I automatically thought of this:

Boeing X32A

I think that was the original #, but with crashes and cannibalizing I think the # of operational planes is far lower if I recall.

The Capt'n will probably be around soon to give better info on the #.
