I would have been fine with Hamilton + Fox for Simmonds, Sanheim and 19th OA.
But I am more than satisfied with the return with Carolina. Can't beat two RFA's that we can negotiate their new contract.

Yeah if Simmonds was the center pieces that's bad. He's too old. I have to imagine there was something bigger involved.

That would have been a terrible trade, and I am glad that Treliving moved on once the Flyers were unwilling to up the ante. Simmonds a fantastic piece to have - given his contract. After that, he will likely become an overpriced player.
Much better deal was made with Carolina.

I mean I guess I would consider a training camp invite. But I wouldn't want to commit a contract spot to a guy like this.

I'm thinking he has 1 last shot.
1 year, $1 million.

I’d sign Jarome Iginla way, way before ever giving Yak a contract.

I'd take both.
Especially because it would all but guarantee Brouwer is gone.

Trouble is, how does signing a free agent RW (or two) take Brouwer's cap hit off the books?

Like it or not, Brouwer is likely here to stay another year.
My hope is that if Brouwer continues to be as ineffective as he has been, then he at least gets relegated to the revolving press-box position. Lazar at least adds speed and fairly good forechecking pressure - something that a 4th line needs to do.
Brouwer does make good defensive reads and he does surprisingly good things with the puck, but moments later he ends up turning the puck over. I made mention of this more than a few times last season. I can't see the Flames wanting to have that buy-out on the books for 4 years either, but maybe next off-season it happens. Ideally Peters finds a way to utilize Brouwer more effectively, though how exactly he would do so stumps me.

Would be, by far the deepest center group Nail Yakupov has ever played with. He has had success with skilled offensive playmaking centers (Gagner as a rookie, Derek Roy a few years later, McDavid, Duchene).
However Gagner was traded after his rookie year, Roy was a bizarre rental, his stint with rookie McDavid only lasted about 8 games when he got injured, and Duchene too was traded.
I am not saying Yak doesn't have on-ice flaws but he is by all accounts a very high character guy and there is no denying his combonation of speed and shooting has yet to be honed due to the fact that he isn't good enough to stick in a top 6 and has never played on a team with centers that can set him up. I do believe he would work with our center group. He probably wouldn't get the PP time here that he wants for his individual success but there is nothing stopping him from adding skill, tenacity, and speed to the bottom of a lineup starved for it.
|
There seems to be a general opinion that Yak is a feisty pure goal scorer with some questions about his playmaking ability, hockey IQ and defensive responsibility. Sounds like a perfect trigger man for Johnny on the PP, who could spend the rest of the time on the 4th line. I wouldn't mind a signing for 1 year at 1M. If it fails, bury him in Stockton.
Imagine what it could be like if Johnny had to option to dish to either Monahan with his deadly, quick accuracy or to Yak with his Howitzer of a one-timer. Defending teams couldn't cover all of the options. Might be the one thing to break Yak out of his funk, giving him what he needs to utilize the skills he has.

I think this will start to be the new norm as the years go by. Teams are seeing the importance of identifying and then locking up good players at a young age.
You're seeing almost any star identified as such and signed for 6-8 years in the 21-23 year old range. Of course if the next CBA sees the 5 year contract limit then that'll change.
As a fan of the game I'd actually like to see that. It would create way more turnover and more exciting trading and free agency.

At a radio sponsor event today, Treliving mentioned how he's looking to add a depth center (Derek Ryan 99% likely), a top 6 forward and while he likes our D corps, he might not be done changing it up yet.
Also mentioned how at the draft that Adam Fox's agent basically said he's likely not going to sign with any team and will go to free agency (I'm guessing he's Rangers bound)

Excellent.
I know they're going to be pricey but a UFA signing of JVR/Neal/Perron would all be good IMO. I'd rather pay more for a shorter term if possible.
Otherwise the Minnesota trio of Coyle/Zucker/Niederreiter all sound like great options, but would require losing some assets which is always scary.
