From what I saw the Kulak/Stone pairing was really good last night. I think the three pairs are already very well balanced.

Smith was not good tonight but it's only half a game. Gillies made two excellent saves, one on a breakaway and one glove save on the ice that was going in.
Sounds like Bennett was really good in Edmonton.

I also noticed Dube quite a bit. To me, he was one of the best players on the ice.

Preseason for veterans doesnt mean much. Mike Smith is a career .913 goalie playing for a series of terrible teams.. When he plays on good teams, good things happen.
Contrary to last night, this is a good team.

Nice to see Kylington do well. I think he has the highest upside of all the young defencemen still. You can teach a young defender to play better positionally on defence (though he makes risky plays, his gap control and coverage is usually pretty damn good), you simply can't teach a young defencemen to play offensively. He has the innate ability to not only try things, but actually make high-level plays work. Really nice to see him shine.
As for Smith and Lack, I can understand the (overly) critical comments. This fanbase is still pretty damn tender given the level of goaltending they have seen the last 2 - 2.5 seasons. This is also an overly tough market on goalies that makes it even more difficult. I mean, the Dome started giving Kipper of all people the Bronx cheer near the end of his career after all. I suspect that I will be very annoyed with a lot of overly-critical comments from posters with regards to the goaltending, but at the same time these will only go away once goaltending is seen as a strength again. Really hoping it starts this season...
It always sucks to lose to the Oilers, even in pre-season, but the sky isn't falling. Just want to see more players get into their groove earlier and be ready by the start of the season. That's my only wish.
Jankowksi is an NHL'er. Dube I think looks close. I suspect he will be sent down to Junior, but I can see him actually making the squad soon - maybe even as early as next year (yeah, that is extremely optimistic, but he has NHL speed, IQ and is so versatile). I liked the pick when it was made, but wasn't over-excited about it. That was a damn good pick by the Flames. I see an NHL'er sooner rather than later there.

^^^Someone compared Dube to Langkow a few days ago and I really like that comparison. Dube even has the same short, compact stride Langkow did. His edgework is impressive as well, he looks like an NHL skater. Didn't expect him to have the hands he does either.
Great pick by Button, Treliving and co.

Yeah Dube has been a pleasant surprise for me. Fast as heck, gritty and skilled. middle six winger for sure. He has the tools to dominate the WJC this year.

Vets aren't gonna go all our in a split squad game in the pre-season...I wouldn't read too much into Gio's play or the pairings.

Eh? I would expect they give a solid effort wether preseason or not honestly. Getting embarrassed by EDM in any fashion is disappointing. Having 2 EDM fans behind me last night calling every player "MR" or "Burley Bear Drai" made the loss even worse.
Game wasn't too bad but in my mind pre-season is no excuse for lazy play.

And that means absolutely nothing this season. People need to chill especially about Smith. As already stated we all thought Elliott was going to have a good season after having a solid preseason and he ended up being a disappointment.

Except that no one was "embarrassed" last night because the vets on the team have a proper perspective on what pre-season games are for and what they mean. The "excuse" for supposedly "lazy play" is in large part to ensure that players do their best to avoid injuries. Pre-season is all about establishing timing and polish. I would much prefer that Giordano dog-it on his back checks at this time of year if the alternative is a pulled groin or hamstring.

He said unironically on a forum whose largest thread is about some weird dick measuring contest with fans of said team.

I think this year's tandem is worse than last. I appreciate that it is only training camp, but why did the goaltenders on the other team not look so useless?

As Cali Panthers Fan mentioned much of the reason for this likely has to do with the fact that the Oilers have already been scrimmaging—the Flames have not. I only saw bits of the Edmonton game and just watched the highlights, but thought I might add another wrinkle to this: three of the goals the Oilers scored were all in scrums around the net. I would imagine that with the much lower level of physical play in the preseason these sorts of goals would also likely occur with uncharacteristic frequency.

losing a one goal game in the preseason where you badly outshoot the other team is getting embarrassed?
IDK, this isn't my first rodeo...didn't the Canucks have a perfect pre-season last year?
