I bought a 107 year old Ross Rifle today. Just in time for Remembrance day I can't imagine being a 20 year old holding this thing in Ypres. Terrifying.

Very happy to own a neat piece of Canadian history

Amazing, you own a piece of historical ####.

I can't think of a better example of how successive Canadian governments have treated their military than the Ross rifle.

Fighting 10th lead the way.

At Kitcheners' Wood, the 10th Battalion, CEF of the 2nd Canadian Brigade was ordered to counter-attack into the gap created by the gas attack; they formed up after 11:00pm on the night of 22 April. The 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) of the 3rd Canadian Brigade arrived as they were forming, tasked to support the advance. Both battalions had over 800 men, formed up in waves of two companies each. The order to advance was given at 11:46pm. The leading waves of the 10th Battalion covered half the distance from the start line to the Wood, running into a strong hedge interlaced with wire. No reconnaissance had been done prior and the battalion was forced to break through the obstacle with rifle butts, while taking fire from German machine guns about 200 yards away. Both battalions charged the last 200 yards to the wood, threw the Germans out, and suffered more than 75 percent casualties. Small parties of French troops, eager to reclaim the French guns that had been abandoned in the wood, had also participated in the battle.

After the war, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Allied Supreme Commander, remarked that the "greatest act of the war" had been the assault on Kitcheners' Wood by the 10th and 16th Battalions.

The 1st Division as a whole suffered some 60% casualties before being relieved, and the 10th and 16th Battalions were reduced to less than 20% of their pre-battle strength.

Holding it by the barrel so that you can use it as a club because the mud had fouled it all up after 1-2 rounds.

Being in a rifle company in either World War was unspeakably tough. Screw the flyers and the navy, the infantry does all the hard work.

Speaking of Remembrance Day what is it with a lot of people posting Memes that this Remembrance Day is 100 years since the guns went silent. Am I missing something?

People are very very dumb, but it is the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles (but 101 years since the Armistice which actually made the guns go silent).

The Calgary Highlanders were rebuilt twice from scratch during the Normandy campaign. That is, every single member was killed or wounded twice over. Current society cannot comprehend the price and you are right about the bromides.

Who would have thought a sporting rifle made to very fine tolerances wouldn't work well in brutal conditions with piss poor quality ammo.

I'd like to say that was a lesson in making military procurement less political, yet here we are 100+ years later doing the same crap

“When I finally turned 18 and signed up in the full-time militia, I signed up in Toronto," he said. "I signed up about 8:00 in the morning. got up early and went up there. And 10:00 at night I was on the train for Dundurn, Saskatchewan for my training.”

Amazing, I am sure the base was as much or a poophole then as it was when I was there.

Crazy, 2 hrs and you are on the train.


The other take away from this is the Dutch, well done to the Dutch. They remember, they never forget the sacrifice of Canadian bodies on their land.

That is impressive.

That was terrific. Thanks for posting that.

It's like this all over the Netherlands. Very heartwarming. In 2012 when we did the battlefield tour following the path of the Essex Scottish Regiment we visited a town called Markelo that was liberated by the E&K. They had a parade and a luncheon to welcome us. They have put up a monument to the Regiment in the town as well.
